MAYWEATHER VS. GUERRERO FOR MAY 4TH? By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 28 Jan 2013 Guerrero. From what I gathered over the weekend in Las Vegas talking to someone familiar with the sport and business of boxing, Floyd Mayweather will be fighting on May 4th in Las Vegas. MGM Grand is the venue of choice and Mandalay Bay could be a back up. The opponent picked is Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero of Gilroy, California. Guerrero sports a record of 31-1-1, 18KO. However, no one is announcing the fight as officially on because there seem to be one major impediment. But I was told, the paper work is all done except that one. Floyd traditionally fights under the banner of HBO Sports. Guerrero being tied down with Golden Boy Promotions is expected to be fighting under the banner of ShowTime Sports. My source said the people putting the fight together are busting their butts to get that one sticking point out of the way and will officially announce the fight soon. Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions can hardly wait to make that announcement. Therefore my source indicated, Mayweather may most probably prevail and the fight will be covered by HBO. ?As to how they will placate ShowTime, no one knows,? my source stated. My source also indicated that Robert Guerrero is now in the midst of looking for a house to rent in Vegas for the duration of the training period. One possible house maybe the one rented by Cesar Chavez Jr. when he trained in Las Vegas. Guerrero may not be the fighter most fans want to see tangle with Mayweather, but at the moment, there is absolutely no way anyone can arrange the fight that everyone wants to see -- the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Pacquiao is suspended in the State of Nevada for six months from the day he got knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez and cannot fight in Nevada until that time is up and a new license is issued to him by the NSAC. Besides, the on-going immature feud between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank is an everlasting impediment to that fight. In addition, as many say Mayweather does not really want to fight Pacquiao. People have provided various reasons for that so I am not touching that now. To some, Guerrero may not be the best choice but the guy has pretty good credentials including 5 successive wins against ranked opponents: Andre Berto (UD 12); Selchuk Aydin (UD12); Michael Katsidis (UD12); Vicente Escobedo (UD10) and Joel Casamayor (UD10). Admittedly, none of them are close to Floyd?s talents but they were still formidable opponents. Guerrero is also the current WBC Interim welterweight champion. That alone qualifies him as a legitimate opponent for Mayweather. ?If I was a betting man,? my source said, ?and I want to see Floyd fight again, I will book the first weekend of May and get a room in Vegas while the rates are still low. Once the fight is announced, the rates for the room at the venue hotel will jump exponentially.? ?It?s a fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend. Robert Guerrero being a Latino fits the billing."
