EMANUEL STEWARD, THE STEWARD OF CHAMPIONS By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 27 Oct 2012 Emanuel ?Manny? Steward was an American boxer, trainer, and commentator for HBO Boxing and a great loss to the boxing world when he died last October 25. Steward trained 41 world and international champion fighters, both professional and amateur, throughout his training career. His heavyweight fighters had a record of 34-2-1 combined in title bouts. He was an inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame, and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Steward was born in Bottom Creek, West Virginia and moved to Detroit, Michigan at age 12 where he began an amateur boxing career. He compiled a record of 94 wins and 3 losses as an amateur boxer and won the 1963 National Golden Gloves tournament in the bantamweight division. After that he began training amateur boxers. In 1971, Steward became a coach at the Kronk Gym. He trained several top amateurs and later championship-caliber professional fighters. Steward is a true ?steward of champions.?
