2012 OLYMPICS: THE LIGHT-FLYWEIGHT BOXING CATEGORY By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sun, 22 Jul 2012 There are 26 boxers who will compete in the light-flyweight category in the 2012 London Olympics, the same weight division where the lone Filipino entry Mark Anthony Barriga will participate. Ten of these boxers qualified during the 2011 AIBA World Championships: Zou Shiming (China) ? gold medalist Shin Jong-Hun (Korea) ? silver medalist David Ayrapetyan (Russia) ? bronze medalist P?revdorjiin Serdamba (Mongolia) ? bronze medalist Kaew Pongprayoon (Thailand) Devendro Singh (India) Jos? de la Nieve (Spain) Yosvany Veitia (Cuba) Mark Anthony Barriga (Philippines) J?r?my Beccu (France) One qualified in the Oceania Olympic Qualifying Event: Billy Ward (Australia) One qualified in the Asian Olympic Qualifying Event: Birzhan Zhakypov (Kazakhstan) Four qualified in the European Olympic Qualifying Event: Ferhat Pehlivan (Turkey) Aleksandar Aleksandrov (Bulgaria) Paddy Barnes (Ireland) Manuel Cappai (Italy) Six qualified in the African Olympic Qualifying Event: Mohamed Flissi (Algeria) Abdelali Daraa (Morocco) Thomas Essomba (Cameroon) Juliano M?quina (Mozambique) Sulemanu Tetteh (Ghana) Ramy Helmy (Egypt) Three qualified in the American Olympic Qualifying Event: Jantony Ort?z (Puerto Rico) Carlos Quipo (Ecuador) Carlos Suarez (Trinidad and Tobago) One qualified by Invitation: Bayron Molina (Honduras) Preliminary bouts for the men?s light-flyweight will be on July 31. The Round-of-16 will be August 4, the quarter-finals on August 8, the semi-finals on August 10 and the finals on August 11. The best bet in the division is Zou Shiming who is the most successful amateur boxer from the People's Republic of China. He has won three amateur world titles in 2005, 2007 and 2011 and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He also won the bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
