IM KIM STEVEN YAP SECURES BACK-TO-BACK WINS IN CAMPOMANES MEMORIAL CHESS CUP IN BRUNEI

FILIPINO International Master Kim Steven Yap scored back-to-back wins in the on-going Brunei Campomanes Memorial Grandmaster Open Chess Championships 2012 in Brunei.

His latest win was against Zulkipli Zaidan of Malaysia yesterday. The Cebuano native Yap earlier beat Ding The How Dilwen of Malaysia on Sunday.

?This is an important tournament for me because it will be my stepping stone to obtain a grandmaster norm if ever I perform well,? said Yap, son of the Singapore-based International Arbiter/Fide Instructor Linkee Yap.

"We hope our players to do well in this event," added National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.

Yap improved his output for a total of 2 points, the same output of countryman IM Oliver Dimakiling of the Philippines, GM Tahir Vakhidov and GM Marat Dzhumaev and IM Jakhongir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan, GM Jha Sriram and IM Dinesh K Sharma of India, GM Nguyen Anh Dung of Vietnam.

In other Round 2 results in the $10,000 total pot prize event being held to honor and commemorate the late FIDE honorary president Filipino Florencio ?Pocamps? Campomanes are IM Dimakiling bested Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia, GM Vakhidov routed FM Pitra Andika of Indonesia, GM Dzhumaev edged FM Mari Joseph Turqueza of the Philippines, IM Vakhidov downed Fong Yit Ho of Malaysia, GM Sriram toppled Pg L Wijaya Pg Hj Mohd Limbang of Brunei, IM Sharma upset GM Oliver Barbosa of the Philippines and GM Ang Dung nipped FM Yee Soon Wei of Brunei.

Meanwhile, GM Richard Bitoon bounced back in contention after crushing Yussof Pg Abd Rahman of Brunei. The Medellin, Cebu pride Bitoon was yielded to Fong Yit Ho in the opening round.

Their trip to Brunei is supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) under the leadership of it's chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., Cebuano chess patron Boogie Lim of Rose Pharmacy, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
