TEAMS FROM CEBU CROWNED CHAMPIONS OF RECENT BATANG PINOY VISAYAS BOXING TOURNAMENT PhilBoxing.com Thu, 17 Nov 2011 Team Talisay City, coached by father-and-son tandem of Gideon and Rashid Bacus was crowned the over-all boxing champions of 2011 Batang Pinoy Visayas leg with 2 golds, courtesy of Marco Pomar (minimumweight), Kit Ceron Garces (mosquitoweight) and silver by Cedrix Joshua Bacus (antweight). Team Cebu City, coached by Jordan Dopalco of CCSC and Rie Munez of ALA boxing gym, also has 2 golds from 2011 Palarong Pambansa champion Junrel Jimenez (light pinweight) and Hipolito Banal (papaerweight), younger brother of WBO AsPac bantamweight champion AJ "Bazooka" Banal. Junille Olivares (minimumweight) also picked bronze for Team Cebu City for second place finish. It was learned from the coaches of Team Talisay City that they almost did not make it to Dumaguete because of some contraints beyond control but because of great will, trust and determination they were able to compete and declared champions. "We were training very hard so we find ways to pursue our goal to compete in Batang Pinoy and we thank God for helping us" added Rashid Bacus. The 4-day boxing hostilities was held at Robinson's Place Dumaguete, attracted 12 teams with over 40 boxers featuring the best in the Visayas region. Gold medal winners are expected to represent Visayas in the National Championships on Dec. 10-13 in Naga City, Camarines Sur. Other gold medal winners include John Smith Gonzales of Leyte Province (antweight),Mario Bautista of Himamaylan City (light paperweight), Kenneth Paul Gentalan of Tagbilaran City (pinweight) and Nikko Mollena of Bayawan City (light flyweight). The tournament was sanctioned by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines ( ABAP) and handled ABREJAP with Victorio Policarpio as technical delegate and Billy Famero as chief jury.
