PhilBoxing.com

Fifteen up-and-coming Filipino taekwondo jins will carry the country?s colors in the 2011 Chicago International Winter Games Taekwondo championships scheduled Nov. 6-8 in the state of Illinois in the U.S.

Nine of those chosen, headed by national training pool candidate Jay-Ar Alombro, came from the Diliman Preparatory School pool of athletes, announced head coach Nap Dagdagan Jr. during Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

Other DPS campaigners in the team are Renzo Toleos, Gabby Lamarca, Amber Acosta, Vince Yango and Keonn Gener, who will be competing in their respective age-group brackets, Jama Razon, Averie Belsenda and Jamin Marcalda, sll entered in the open weight divisions.

Other members of the team are Marco dela Cruz of the College of St. Anthony, Dominie Yu of St. Jude Catholic School, Marigold Taculog, Justin Froi De Jesus and Chariza Camille Alombro, of the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and Cart de Jesus of La Salle-Greenhills.

The team?s participation in the Chicago competition is part of DPS sports development program that has so far contributed several jins to the national teams, including siblings Japoy and Jara Lizardo, the Alombro sisters and Taculog.

?Sending athletes to the different international competitions is a continuing program by the DPS towards producing future national campaigners, ? said former Senator and DPS owner Nikki Coseteng, who accompanied her athletes to the public service forum, sponsored by Coca Cola Export, FILA, TV 5 and UNTV.

The trip was made possible through the invitation extended by Chicago International Winter Games tournament director Iris Wegener, Coseteng said. Besides taekwondo, the DPS program, Coseteng added, also includes swimming and, basketball.

?Next year, we will be forming a varsity basketball team that will be competing in the Universities and Colleges Athletics Association, she said. The team will be made up of outstanding players the came from the schools intramurals.

Like taekwondo, the DPS swimming program has also been contributing tankers who made it to several national teams, earning honors for the country despite non-recognition by the Philippine Aquatics Sports Association, the accredited national sports association of the Philippine Olympic Committee.
