GORRES VIES FOR OPBF TITLE TODAY
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 18 Mar 2006
Will it be a dream come true or a nightmare for Z Gorres tonight?
The talented southpaw Gorres plunges into the biggest fight of his career tonight as he takes on Thai toughie Waenpetch Chuwatana for the vacant OPBF superfly title in a 12-round war at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex headlining the 10-bout card dubbed "A Dream Come True."
The fight pits the shifty Gorres (22-1-1, 12 KO's) against the durable Chuwatana (23-7-2, 14 KO's) in what will be a classic boxer-puncher showdown.
Both Gorres and Chuwatana came in at an exact 115 lbs during official weigh-in yesterday at the ALA Gym.
All eyes will be on Gorres, however, as executives of Oscar De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, who inked him yesterday to a promotional deal, will be at special ringside to assess his full potential in person.
Gorres is coming off a one-sided decision win over Jose Alfredo Tirado last February 3 in Las Vegas, where he impressed boxing pundits with his all-around skills.
The Mandaue City native, however, is unfazed by the pressure, as he comes fully-prepared to go the full route.
In the chief support, WBO Asia-Pacific super-featherweight boss Czar Amonsot goes up against Thai Dechco Bankluaygym in a 10-round non-title showdown.
An RP championship showdown for the vacant flyweight title also takes place between ALA Boy Rocky Fuentes and Wakee Salud protege Jojo Bardon.
The rest of the card pits: AJ Banal versus Dechapol Bankluaygym; Robert Allanic against Roberto Rubillar; Rey Caitom versus Joy Adrian; Nori Iwatani against Glen Masicampo; Frank Albia versus Joe Galamiton; Nic Banal versus Rolly Baclayo; and Ninolito Jalnaiza versus Noel Acasio.
