DANNY GREEN EYES HOPKINS
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 24 May 2011
IBO Cruiserweight champion Danny Green hopes to overcome the challenge of former three-time world champion Antonio Tarver in Sydney, Australia on July 20 and then go after a big money fight in the US against WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard ?The Executioner? Hopkins.
The 46 year old Hopkins became the oldest world champion in history with a close but unanimous twelve round decision over Canada?s Jean Pascal in Montreal on Sunday.
At a press tour stop in Perth, Western Australia to promote the Tarver fight, Green said ?If I can defeat Tarver, HBO in America would love to put that fight on,? adding ?Hopkins and I have history.?
Green, nicknamed ?The Green Machine? was last year negotiating to fight Hopkins after Green he blasted Roy Jones Jr in one round in December 2009. Instead, Hopkins decided to take on Jones Jr, who he beat easily on points.
Green?s trainer Angelo Hyder stressed that opportunities would come if Green defeats Tarver.
Boxing writer Brett Bonetti reports that although Hopkins appears to have plans for his next two fights, Green Machine Boxing seems optimistic a fight against Hopkins could be negotiated.
Bonetti said a fight for Green against Denis Lebedev who is trained by Kostya Tszyu is not likely after Lebedev knocked out Roy Jones jr on the weekend.
Tszyu suggested his fighter?s next challenge should be against Green. ?I think the fans would love to see that fight,? Tszyu said.
But Green dismissed the suggestion and said: ?When you are looking at fighting Antonio Tarver, who is a superstar, and then there?s the potential to be on HBO in the United States as a main event in a monster of a fight against Bernard Hopkins, why would you look at Lebedev? I think there?s much bigger fish to fry.?
