EX-OPBF CHAMP MAYOL FLIES TO TOKYO FOR WBC CONTRACT-SIGNING By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 22 Feb 2006 Fight fans may now call him the former OPBF champ, and the future WBC minimumweight kingpin. This after Rodel "Batang Mandaue" Mayol relinquished his OPBF miniumweight throne to pave the way for his May 8 crack at WBC minimumweight kingpin Eagle Kyowa. Today, Mayol is set to fly to Japan to sign the dotted lines for the said WBC title crack. In an interview with this writer yesterday, the undefeated Mayol did not divulge the final venue of the fight, saying that he will only know once he gets to see the contract, adding that he will immediately return to the country on February 24 to continue his training for the fight. Earlier, Mayol had emphasized that his Japanese manager, businessman Yasuo Matsuoka, is poised to submit a counter-offer to Kyowa's camp to entice the latter to come to the Philippines to defend his title against Mayol here. Aside from the contract-signing, Mayol will also take part in the press conference that will officially announce his titular crack at Kyowa's belt. Mayol (22-0, 17 KO's) is coming off an impressive fourth-round annihilation of Mexican Lorenzo Trejo last January 28 in their scheduled 12-round eliminator during the WBC Night of Champions in Cancun, Mexico. Kyowa, a Japan-based Thai, has been in five consecutive WBC title matches since he won the crown from Mexican Jose Antonio Aguirre on January 10, 2004. He briefly lost the title to Mexican Isaac Bustos later that year, but regained the green belt last year by beating Katsunari Takayama, who had ealier dethroned the limited Bustos. Set to vie for Mayol's vacated OPBF title are Japanese Akira Yaegashi and Thai Weerasak Chuwatana, who will duke it out on April 3 in Yokohama, Japan for the vacant title.
