DONAIRE WANTS VAZQUEZ JR AFTER MONTIEL By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 11 Dec 2010 WBA Continental Americas bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire says he hopes to beat WBC/WBO champion Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel in their February 11 showdown and then plans to move up and hopefully take on WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. The 26 year old Vazquez Jr won the vacant title with a 4th round knockout over under-trained and over-matched ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona on February 27, 2010 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Sonsona, the former WBO super flyweight champion had moved up two divisions to face Vazquez Jr with no previous tune-up fights at the heavier weight. Vazquez Jr has a record of 20-0-1 with 17 knockouts and is the son of the legendary Wifredo Vazquez, the former world WBA super bantamweight and featherweight champion. Donaire who arrives with wife Rachael on Tuesday morning from San Francisco told the Inquirer ?after Montiel I think I want to try to move up to 122. I feel really strong and I?m not coming down as much so maybe after Montiel I?m going to move up unless the guys in the on-going bantamweight tournament will fight and I will go for it. But I?m not going to wait for them to finish their tournament.? Donaire who is expected to receive a huge welcome from ABS-CBN which telecasts his fights said ?I?m want to go out there and face the champions in the higher divisions and conquer the divisions.? Donaire mentioned WBO 122 pound champion Vazquez Jr and said ?that?ll be fun.? At the same time Donaire spoke about the possibility of a title fight later on with popular WBC featherweight champion Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez and said that if Top Rank promoter Bob Arum ?had him face (Rafael) Marquez, why not with me? We?ll see.? Donaire who smashed former world bantamweight champion and Sydney 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Wladimir Sidorenko who beat Daniel Ponce De Leon and Omar Narvaez who later became world champions said his victory was due to being ?in incredible shape the addition of speed trainer Remy Korchanmy who is actually Ukrainian and that was ironic because I was fighting a Ukrainian and he was helping me. He is a nice guy and really well known in the track and field world.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
