GREEN KO?S BRIGGS IN 29 SECONDS IN FARCICAL IBO TITLE FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 22 Jul 2010 IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green has scored a 29 second knockout over an overweight Paul Briggs in what can only be described as a farcical title fight at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Western Australia. Fight fans were furious after Briggs went down from what appeared to be a glancing blow to the top of the head and failed to beat the count. Reports from Perth said there was a wild response from the capacity crowd who threw bottles and food at Briggs as he made his exit from the stadium. Green himself was visibly very angry saying that Briggs wasn?t even a dog and would not be paid the reported $200,000 purse. Green told the crowd he wanted to go to the dressing room of Briggs and ?give him the flogging he deserves.? The fight has been surrounded by controversy with boxing writer Jamie Pandaram reporting a week before the fight that Briggs was sparring when he ?lumbered to a corner of the ring and started vomiting.? Pandaram said indications are that Briggs is no longer the fighter who rose to prominence in 2005 against Tomasz Adamek - not even close. But he is certainly a man desperate to collect a life-changing pay cheque of $200,000. The reason the New South Wales Combat Authority refused to sanction the bout in this state could become apparent in the opening exchanges. And they were. Briggs also weighed in some 3.2 kilos over the agreed weight but the fight went on. Known as "The Green Machine" the IBO champion improved to 29-3 with 26 knockouts while Briggs fell to 26-3 with 18 knockouts. It was the 37 year old Green's fifth straght knockout win having stopped Puerto Rico's Manny Siaca in three rounds on April 14, 2010 after a sensational 1st round KO of former pound-for-pound king Roy Jones Jr on December 2, 2009. Green won the IBO title with a 5th round TKO over Argentina's Julio Cesar Dominguez on August 15, 2009. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
