ERRONEOUS REPORT ON SONSONA?S WEIGHT CAUSES CONCERN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 04 Jul 2010 There was concern among Filipino fight fans after a report on the preliminary pre-fight weigh in for the ?Pinoy Power/Latin Fury? series of Top Rank Promotions scheduled at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jos? Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday, July 11, Manila Time and a television video clip stated that Philippine bantamweight champion Eden Sonsona weighed 137.1 pounds which was even heavier than featherweight title challenger Bernabe Concepcion who tipped the scales at 136. However, when we expressed our concern to Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz who was in Puerto Rico he assured us that the report was a mistake and that Sonsona (21-5, 7 KO?s) weighed 127.1 pounds which was only 5 pounds over the super bantamweight limit which Koncz said was ?no problem.? Sonsona who is the Philippine bantamweight champion is moving up in weight to fight Puerto Rican super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo (18-2, 11 KO?s) in a WBO title eliminator with the winner promised a title shot at undefeated champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. Well known boxing man and TV analyst Moy Lainez had expressed his concern over the possibility of Sonsona whom he described as a natural bantamweight, battling Vazquez Jr who is big and strong and had previously knocked out former WBO super flyweight champion and Eden?s cousin ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona in four rounds. However, Koncz indicated that they would first see how Sonsona does in the fight against Oquendo before making any decisions on whether to move up to challenge Vaszquez Jr. Meantime, WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez (28-0, 25 KOs) weighed 128 pounds, which was just two pounds over the featherweight limit while Concepcion (28-3-1, 15 KOs) who arrived Friday night in Puerto Rico weighed 136 pounds. However, Concepcion?s handlers including trainer Restituto ?Buboy? Fernandez insisted that there will be no problems on the day of the official weigh-in and his weight was a result of the long journey and the fact that he hadn?t worked out before the weigh-in. After the weigh-in, which took place in Las Catalinas Mall in Caguas, Lopez said "we have never had weight problems, but now at 126 we are much better than we were at 122." Koncz for his part said both he and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao believe that if Concepcion who trained hard at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles follows the fight plan, he has a good chance of scoring an upset over the hard-hitting, southpaw Lopez who is a hero in Puerto Rico. The fight card will also feature WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire who defends his title against power-punching Mexican Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez is scheduled to arrive in Puerto Rico on Monday. Donaire told us he?s feeling really good after some tough sparring sessions with former featherweight champion Steven Luevano and IBF super featherweight champion Robert ?The Ghost? Guerrero. The giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN will telecast the fights on a slightly delayed basis. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
