BUHAIN MOVES TO HOST 2007 WBC CONVENTION By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 17 Oct 2005 Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain, fresh from his recent trip to the World Boxing Council Annual World Convention in Spain, has announced his intention for the Philippines to host this prestigious annual conclave. "The Philippines is regarded as one of the oldest pillars of the WBC , since our country's role in the global community of boxing is even older than that of WBC's existence. As a matter of fact , our country has been awarded the miniature replica of the WBC championship title belt as a clear testimonial of their recognition to us," Buhain said in his report to the GAB Board. The last time the country hosted the WBC Convention was in 1970. It also played host to the annual conclave in 1967. "The GAB Board had unanimously approved a resolution to be sent to the WBC headquarters informing them of the interest and the decisive intention of this country to handle the WBC affairs by 2007," informed GAB Commissioner Alex Paglumotan, in his column over at Philboxing.com. Buhain, according to Paglumotan, plans to tap a consortium between the Department of Tourism as well as other inter-related agencies of the national government to work out a plan to ensure the success of the convention. At the recent convention in Spain, Buhain was credited for convincing the WBC Board to make the winner of the January 21 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales as the mandatory challenger to WBC super-featherweight king Marco Antonio Barrera.
