DOMINGO IN EMOTIONAL BID FOR REVENGE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 21 May 2010 WBO Oriental bantamweight champion Michael Domingo battles menacing Colombian Luis Melendez in an emotional bid for revenge against the lethal-punching Melendez who ended the promising career of Domingo?s close friend, the classy Z ?The Dream? Gorres at the Mandalay Bay House of Blues in Las Vegas last November. Melendez was scheduled to arrive after a long and tiring trip at 7:00 p.m. in Cebu and will be whisked off to the Waterfront Hotel for a press conference hosted by ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer who is teaming up with the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN which will telecast the fights also on its Global network through the popular TFC or The Filipino Channel. Dubbed Hangad na Paghihiganti, the fight card will pit Domingo who is regarded as one of the country?s best kept secrets for a world title against Melendez. Melendez, best remembered for that wicked punch that dropped Gorres in the dying seconds of a ten round bout which Gorres dominated resulted in Gorres collapsing in his corner after the decision was announced. Gorres was rushed to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas and underwent brain surgery. His condition was reported touch-and-go but a near miraculous recovery because of the prayers of millions of his countrymen and the affection and attention of family and friends helped Gorres recover to lead a normal life. What happened to Gorres is fresh in the minds of Domingo who cried when he heard the news and fight fans who realized that Gorres was on the threshold of a world title fight against WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel when the tragedy happened. While fight fans and Domingo will remember the incident that cut-short the career of one of the nicest young men in the famed ALA Gym roster of fighters and there is an underlying theme of revenge, Melendez can rest assured that Filipino boxing fans may be emotional but are not vindictive by nature and he will receive a fair decision no matter what happens. A lot of drama is sure to unfold as Michael Domingo is teeming with desire to punish and avenge his best friend Z Gorres? tormentor on home soil for the Filipino boxing fans to behold. Domingo, looms as one of the most avoided fighters in his division, as Montiel recently turned down an offer for Domingo to fight him instead of Gorres and chose the far less experienced Ciso ?Kid Terrible? Morales. Morales who was forced to reduce 12 pounds in six days to make the 118 pound limit was demolished in one round and should never have been in the same ring with the veteran Montiel. Domingo has been training hard in an effort to establish his long overdue prominence as a worthy world title challenger. In the supporting-main event of the evening, Jimrex ?Executioner? Jaca, who recently signed with ALA Promotions will pit his skills against James Kimori of Kenya. Jaca on the comeback trail promises to do make short work of his foe to prove he is still a force in his division. Also in the under card are fast rising boxing stars Jason Pagara and James Bacon. With these fighters in tow, Philippine boxing has a lot to look forward to. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
