CANILLAS TO GO FOR KNOCKOUT IN HIS FIRST MAIN EVENT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 21 May 2010 Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas is on song at the prospect of figuring in his first main event when he battles Dexter Mendoza in an interesting fight card titled ?Best of Boxing I? at the Mandaue City Sports Complex on Saturday. Canillas got the break after Japan?s former WBA interim and WBC world minimum weight champion Katsunari Takayama injured his right wrist in a freak accident while jogging and had to pull out of his scheduled featured bout against tough and durable Jason Rotoni. Elevated to main event status Canillas relished the opportunity and said he plans to continue his string of knockout victories. The colorful Canillas has 11 knockouts in 12 wins with 2 losses and is coming off a 6th round TKO win over African warrior Fred Sayumi in Dubai last month after earlier scoring a 2nd round knockout over Thai Petch wins Gym last January14 in Cebu. Mendoza?s record isn?t that impressive with a `11-7-2 slate with 4 knockouts. He is coming off a 4th round TKO loss to reigning WBC International super flyweight champion Sylvester Lopez. However, Mendoza is expected to do his best to try and upset the fancied Canillas. Bohol?s Arnel Tadena 8-5-3 with 4 knockouts steps up to replace Takayama in the clash with Rotoni while entertaining Jojo ?Flash? Intor (11-6-5, 5 KO?s) faces off with Mark Jesson Taroja 5?3-1, 2 KO?s) , a known bell-to-bell fighter in a six round showdown. One of the promising fighters on the card who is worth watching is Rolito Gasca who has an impressive record of 12-1 with 2 knockouts. Gasca takes on rugged Jessie Albaracin (6-3-3, 5 KO?s) in a ten round bantamweight battle. The fights will be covered by Viva Sports for its top rated weekly boxing show ?The Main Event? telecast on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. over RPN 9 and sponsored by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum.
