KATSIDIS IN SMASHING WIN

PhilBoxing.com

Australia?s WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis who is popular in the Philippines after he served as team captain of the Philippine squad that beat Mexico 5-1 in the World Cup of Boxing in August 2007, has scored a smashing victory over Britain?s No.1 rated Kevin Mitchell.

The large outdoor crowd of fight fans at the Upton Park football stadium in London were terribly disappointed by the result as Katsidis dominated the British fighter and staggered the hometown hero early in the third round.

Sensing he had Mitchell in deep trouble the hard-hitting Katsidis followed up with a furious barrage of punches giving referee Dave Perris no alternative but to call a halt to stop the hapless Mitchell from getting a worse beating at 1:57 of the round.

Katsidis who fought in Cebu on Janiary 31, 2009 but put on a disappointing performance against an opponent who ran all night, Angel Hugo Ramirez, had earlier scored an impressive victory over Vicente Escobedo on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr?s comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand on September 19, 2009.

The split decision was a travesty as Katsidis clearly dominated the fight we covered along with Dyan Castillejo for the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN in the Philippines.

Katsidis is best remembered by Filipino fight fans for his exciting but bloody brawl with southpaw Czar Amonsot at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino on July 21, 2007. Both fighters ended up in hospital side by side with Katsidis looking like the beaten fighter although a speck of blood discovered outside the brain of Amonsot forced him to take a break from boxing.

Katsidis frustrated Britain's Kevin Mitchell Saturday night. Domingo meanwhile will have his big night on Sunday May 23 as he takes on Gorres conqueror Luis Melendez at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu City.
