DOMINGO BANKS ON GORRES AS HIS SECRET WEAPON By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 14 May 2010 Michael Domingo. WBO Oriental bantamweight champion Michael Domingo is banking on his close friend Z "The Dream" Gorres as his secret weapon when he battles Colombia?s fearsome Luis Melendez at the plush Pacific ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel and Casino on Sunday, May 23. Giant TV network ABS/CBN in collaboration with ALA Promotions will telecast the fight card dubbed "Hangad na Paghihiganti" or "Desire for Revenge," nationwide. Boxing patron Tony Aldeguer told us there is a lot of emotional interest in the fight because of what happened to Gorres after he scored a smashing ten round decision over Melendez last November. Gorres collapsed in his corner after the decision was announced and underwent brain surgery which ended his promising career on the threshold of a title rematch with WBO bantamweight champion Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel. Regarded as a make or break fight for him, Domingo revealed that he will bank on Gorres provide insights in how to overcome the challenge of Melendez. Domingo said "Nothing can be more reassuring than having Gorres as my secret weapon. He has been advising me how to elude the potent blows of Melendez and how to knock him out as well." ALA Promotions President, Michael Aldeguer believes that the fight will not last the distance. He said, "Either one can punch. Melendez can end the fight with one blow while Domingo can bring him down by a series of blows like what WBO World Champion Fernando Montiel did." Nicknamed, "Bruce Lee", Domingo?s record of 39-14-2 with 17 knockouts may not look impressive because most of his losses came early in his career before joining the fabled ALA Gym. Since then he has come out with impressive wins over world-rated fighter like Jose Navarro, Ratanachai Sor Vorapin & Miguel Roman. The memory of Gorres collapsing after his fight with Melendez and the subsequent battle to recover from brain surgery is too fresh to be forgotten although the amiable and well-loved Gorres is on the road to full recovery. Falling back on some of the more inspiring battle-cries like, "Remember the ALAMO" and "Remember Bataan", the emotional Domingo declared his own battle-cry; "Remember Gorres" saying " This will be in my mind in every round of the fight." The battle-scarred veteran Domingo is aware that he will be fighting a ferocious and deadly puncher who has 21 knockouts in 26 wins with 8 of the KO?s coming in the 1st round. The explosive fight card will also feature another interesting battle between come-backing Jimrex Jaca who will take on tough James Kimori of Kenya, Africa.
