ALL SET FOR FRIDAY NIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLE-HEADER IN TOKYO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 30 Apr 2010 All is set for Friday night?s championship doubleheader in Tokyo with the eagerly-awaited bantamweight battle between WBC champion Hozumi Hasegawa and WBO champion Fernando Montiel heading the blockbuster card. Respected businessman-sportsman Akihiko Honda of the Teiken Gym will be the promoter. Hasegawa (28-2, 12 KOs) will be making his eleventh defense of the title against Montiel (40-2-2, 30 KOs) who many Filipino fighters believe is on the way down despite his first round knockout of terribly overmatched Ciso ?Kid Terrible? Morales in a title fight at the Las Vegas Hilton last February 13. Hasegawa, a hard-hitting southpaw who has won his last five fights by knockouts in a total of 10 rounds tipped the scales at 117 ? pounds while Montiel weighed exactly 118. The Japan Boxing Commission which does not recognize the WBO has indicated that should Hasegawa win he will not accept the WBO title but if Montiel triumphs then he will take home the WBC belt. In a WBC super-bantam title fight Japan?s defending champion Toshiaki Nishioka (35-4-3, 22 KOs) will face unbeaten but inexperienced Filipino challenger Balweg Bangoyan (15-0, 7 KOs).Both fighters weighed in at the 122-pound limit.. The WBC officials appointed for Hasegawa-Montiel fight are controversial Texas referee Laurence Cole with judges Duane Ford (US), Daniel Van de Wiele (Belgium), and Steve Morrow (US) while the supervisor will be WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman of Mexico, son of WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman. For the Nishioka-Bangoyan fight the referee will be Gelacio Perez (Mexico) and the judges, Malcolm Bulner (Australia), Noppharat Sricharoen (Thailand) and Dong-Ahn Park (Korea) with the supervisor being Juan Sanchez (US). The ring announcer will be the well-known and widely respected Jimmy Lennon. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
