Power-playing Manila dumps Pasig in girls softball

Coach Ana Santiago used five of her six-pitcher rotation as powerhouse Team Manila massacred Pasig City, 15-0, in a five-inning regulation opening its campaign to recapture the Big League (16-18) division girls softball championship of the Philippine Little League Series yesterday at the Vinzons High School fields in Daet, Camarines Norte.

Veronica Belleza, Riza Bernardino, Liza Marie Muyco, Erica Escanuela and Melanie Macatangay pitched an inning each not allowing any Pasiguena batter to reach base on hit as the Manila Golden Girls? showed their determined bid to romp off with the title denied them last year in right in their own backyard.
Then the defending champion, the Manaila Golden Girls were dethroned by Rizal Province in the 2009 edition hosted by the Big City.
Only three Pasiguenas succeeded in boarding at first base, one on a base-on-balls, another on an error and still one other when hit by pitched ball in a brutal display of first line defense rarely seen in this annual event.
Besides holding the fort on the mound, Macatangay, Bernardino and Muyco, likewise, showed their muscles at the box reaping a homerun each in the Golden Girls? 14 connections off a pair of Pasig hurlers.

The hard-hitting Macatangay fashioned out the first grandslam homerun in the two-day, 74-team tournament and four-divisison tournament for boys baseball and girls softball highlighting the Manilenyas? nine-run, five-hit annihilation in the second inning that finally broke the back of the hapless opponents.

Muyco, younger sister of Philippine Blu Girls mainstay and now-United States-based Cloiene, complemented Macatangay?s grandslam with a two-run shot an inning later, while Bernardino had a solo blast, also in the second. The Manilenyas decided the issue right in the opening frame with a three-run, twos-hit salvo starring Isabelle Gomez, Marlyn Francisco, who belted out a double each.
?Determinado ang mga bata na mabawi ang korona na nawala sa Maynila noong nakaraang taon at katawanin uli ang bansa sa World Series,? Santiago, who also coaches the national women?s team, said of her wards? firepower display.
Winner of the divisison advance to the Asia Pacific World Series elimination later this year in Bandung, Indonesia. The 16-18 class World Series is set August in Kalamazoo, Michigan where Manila finished runnerup in 2008.

Team Manila actually scored a double whammy when its boys baseball Major Leaguers (11-12) eked out a 6-5 decision over Caloocan City over at the Our Lady of Lourdes Foundation College grounds.
Smokey Mountain, a team made up of players from the University Athletic Assocxiation of the Philippines, appeared most-likely as Team Manila?s chief rival for the 16-18 plum by handing Pasig its second defeat in the day with another 15-0 regulation shutout.

Rizal Province routed Smokey Mountain, 12-2, also in regfulation, in girls? softball Junior League (13-14) category, while Cavite nipped ILLAM (International Little League Association of Manila), 4-3, in the Senior League (14-16), also in girls softball.

Defending boys baseball Big League champion Tanauan City cruised to its second straight triumph after Isabela conceded the contest after only three and-a-half frames while ILLAM defeated Muntinlupa City, 9-6, also in the 16-18 division competition.
