Ex-US judge to mediate Pacquiao-Mayweather impasse By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Mon, 04 Jan 2010 The man who mediated the promotional tug-of-war between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions three years ago has again been tapped to settle the differences between the camps Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in connection with what seems an aborted fight between the two fighters. Former San Francisco Superior Court Judge Daniel Weinstein, acknowledged as to have authored the out-of-court settlement between Top Rank and Golden Boy in regards to the promotional right for all Pacquiao fights in the United States has reportedly been approached by both camps in efforts to save the what is billed as a multi-million dollar encounter. Representatives of both fighters are scheduled to meet Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) in the office of Weinstein in Santa Monica, California to try to revive talks between the sides through mediation. Weinstein will serve as the mediator, according to a Gazette source. Weinstein had successfully mediated a dispute between the same two sides in 2006 over promoting Pacquiao, who had signed with both firms. Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who will represent Pacquiao at the mediation along with Top Rank President Todd DuBoef, said Sunday night the only way that talks will resume is for Mayweather's side to drop its demands for random blood-testing, and to apologize publicly to Pacquiao for previously implying that the Filipino superstar and seven-time world champion was taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs. Team Mayweather had demanded an Olympic-style, random blood-testing to be done by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, but has since softened on that after Pacquiao stood path on his stand to have his blood tested within 30 days of the fight. Statements from Mayweather camp insinuating of Pacquiao?s use of performance enhancement drugs drew a defamation suit from the Filipino who claimed such were made to downgrade him and destroy his reputation as a seven-division champion and pound-for-pound king. Neither fighter though has history of having tested positive for any banned performance-enhancing drugs. Arum was reported as saying whether the mediation can be successful in saving the possible welterweight fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. If the dispute can't be resolved over the next few days, there's still a chance the sides can come to an agreement later and the fight pushed back to May or later in the summer. Arum refused to comment on whether Pacquiao's lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions ? which represents Mayweather for this fight ? for defamation of character would be part of a mediation settlement. Weinstein is considered as one of America?s pre-eminent mediators of complex civil disputes and a pioneer in the development of mediation. His expertise includes designing and resolving complex, multiparty, high-stakes cases. In 1998, Weinstein, who graduated cum laude at Harvard Law School, was named US representative to the Bosnian Privatization Commission, overseeing the transfer of $15 billion of state-owned assets to citizen of Bosnia.
