MAYOL NEW CHAMP,SONSONA STRIPPED OF TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Exactly a week after Filipino sensation Manny Pacquiao scored a stunning 15th round stoppage of Miguel Cotto, Philippine boxing suffered one of the most embarassing experience in the international boxing scene over the weekend.
The country’s celebration on Pacquiao’s latest capers that cemented his reign as the world’s finest pound-for-pound fighter with a record seven belts in as many weight divisions, took an abrupt ending when it lost one of its six world championship belts on technicality.
Over at the Casino Rama in Ontario in Canada,19-year-old Sonsona was dethroned as World Boxing Organization super-flyweight champion on the scales as he failed to make the 115-pound limit.

And although he managed to draw with Alejandro Hernandez, Sonsona, nicknamed “Marvelous,” in their 12-round scrap, the rules stripped him of the title after making the tape 2.5 pounds more than the allowed limit.
Luckily though countryman Rodel Mayol somewhst lessened the impact of such embarassment with a sensational second round techn ical knockout victory over long-time world champion Edgar Sosa of Mexico to crown himself the World Boxing Council light-flyweight belt holder at the Palenque de la Feria in Chiapas, Meico.
Mayol’s victory that ended his long years of title search, kept the Philippines’ world championship number of six, including Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight crown, Nonito Donaire Jr.’s super-flyweight belt, Brian Viloria’s ligh-fly plum, Donie Nietes’ minimum weight title and Julaton’s women’s super-bantamweight diadem.
That raised Mayol’s career record to 26-4 win-loss with 20 KOs while dropping Sosa, ranked at the top 20 in the pound-for-pound list, to 37-6 with 21 Ko's.

Mayol started aggressively in the opening round and scoring with a solid right cross that rocked the Mexican and set the tone of what was in store the rest of the way.
The Filipino was deducted a point starting the second round when he inflicted a cut over the champion’s cheeck on an head-butt.

The game Filipino more than made up for that going after Sosa at the resumption sending the stunned belt-holder to the canvas for an eight count. He continued pressing his attack afte thr the count with the outclassed deposed champ appearing to be still groggy and unable to defend himself.
A barrage of lefts and rights thrown by the Filipino challenger, forced the referee to stop the fight
Sonsona (14-0-1, 12KOs), reeling from the thought that he had been stripped of the title he won only a few months ago, failed to impress in his 12-round collssison with Hernandez (22-7-1, 11KOs). The scores were 115-113 Sonsona, 115-113, Hernandez and 114-114 for the draw.
It was a sorry loss for Sonsona who wass tagged as the head-on favorite to hurdle Hernandez. Pre-fight reports had it that the youthful Sonsona, townmate of Pacquiao General Santos City and tagged as the the latter’s most probable successor, was not taking his training for the fight seriously.
WBO rules rendered the super flyweight division vacant
Sonsona was able to box well in the early rounds but could never hurt or keep Hernandez from coming forward. He struggled with Hernadez down the stretch, leading to some very close rounds. Sonsona, moving up to super bantamweight, is scheduled to fight in Manila on February 20.
