Sonsona and Morales Tested to the Limit at Rumble at Rama X

PhilBoxing.com

Belt or no belt, Marvin Sonsona made his return to Casino Rama as a local hero to many Filipino fans that adored the young phenom. Everywhere he went, he was met by fans asking to take a picture and autograph. The main event featuring Marvin Sonsona vs. Alejandro Hernandez went to a complete twelve rounds in an action packed bout. There were many exchanges of punches between the two boxers going back and forth that was spectacular to watch.

A perfect match between a big puncher vs. a counter puncher. Both boxers also demonstrated that they have durable chins with the barrage of punches they both got hit with. Alejandro gave it his best and tried to win the vacant title, like he predicted, the fight lasted twelve rounds. It was a tough fight for both of them and was so close, it could have gone either way. The end result was a split draw, 115-113 for Sonsona, 115-113 for Hernandez and 114-114. Alejandro will go up the rankings with this performance while Marvin will move up in weight.

Featured in an eight round undercard bout was Ciso Morales who made his Canadian debut against an imposing and larger opponent Miguel Gonzalez from Mexico. This fight was nothing less than a slugfest which pleased the fans. Ciso against a larger and more powerful opponent showed that he can take everything Gonzalez can dish out to him from every angle. Ciso got hit often with a variety of punches throughout the fight and got himself into trouble and had to clutch on many times. Ciso clearly showed that he will not back down or get knocked down and countered with many sets of power punches and combos landing on Gonzalez. This match had a spectacular display and number of power punches endured by both boxers and Gonzalez demonstrated how durable he was as Ciso landed many inside punches that Gonzalez didn‘t expect. Ciso prevailed through his relentless attacks on Gonzales and got the unanimous decision scoring 78-74, 77-75 and 76-76. With this win Ciso will make a return to another Rumble at Rama edition in the future.

Overall, the two Filipino boxers were nicely matched up with both of their Mexican opponents. Hernandez and Gonzales were serious opponents that gave Sonsona and Morales more than a handful. The two Pinoy boxers have now discovered for themselves how tough Mexican opponents can be that took them to the brink of a decision and draw.

During the post fight press conference, Marvin’s promoters addressed his weight issue and that they discovered within a day before the fight, that it was almost impossible for Marvin to lose the extra 2.6 lbs in which they relinquished the WBO superfly weight title. All of Marvin’s promoters, Sammi Gello-Ani, Sampson Lewkowicz and Allan Tremblay addressed Marvin’s weight issue thus having Marvin bow out gracefully from the superfly weight division the day before the fight due to his growth.

The promoters stated that since Marvin last fought, the youngster has grown two inches in height contributing to his weight, therefore they will make an adjustment to the weight class he will be competing in. They also didn’t want to risk unnecessary health issues or injuries in the ring by trying to cut further weight. Marvin was dehydrated to his maximum tolerance. He suffered a bruised left hand that occurred in the third round and went to the hospital for x-rays immediately after the post presser. Marvin commentated that because he injured his left hand, he could not deliver the same power punches that he is known for.

There are plans for Marvin to have another title shot in the Philippines on his next fight. Meanwhile, Ciso Morales weight class will step down to the next lighter division which is superfly weight which would be more appropriate for him.
