WITH HIS WIN OVER MARQUEZ, MAYWEATHER EARNED HIS TICKET TO THREE GREAT FIGHTS By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Sep 2009  Las Vegas, NV:- Almost everything that was expected did happen this weekend at the MGM Grand. First, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was booed incessantly by the Mexican crowd that paid hard-earned money to see their boxing idol, Juan Manuel Marquez, takes a shot at greatness. Second, Floyd Mayweather Jr., beat the Mexican “Dinamita”. He won via a wide UD over 12 rounds proving true the old adage- “a good big man will almost always beat a good small man”. Along the way he also scored a quick flash knockdown in round two. Everyone expected a Mayweather victory particularly after he came in bigger than his Mexican foe during the weigh-in and possibly out-weigh him by more than 10 pounds at fight night. Third, as many predicted, in spite of all the hard work of the good people at GBP, the MGM Grand was far from being sold-out and filled to the brim. The number of fans who saw the fight live is nowhere near the number of those who came when Pacquiao fought Marquez. Even the press room was missing a few familiar faces that routinely cover events like these and surprisingly, they did not announce the attendance either. With the victory, Mayweather earned himself three great fights if he stays in the fight business just like he said when he declared that he is back. First, with Shane Mosley. But since Mayweather abhors risks, Mosley may have to wait until hell freezes over. Mayweather will find ways to avoid this fight because he knows amongst the legitimate welterweights who can match up with him, Mosley is the most dangerous. Mayweather loves himself too much to risk a beat down by Mosley, thus if he cannot avoid Mosley, he will make him wait a while and also ask for the lion’s share of the pot. Then there is Antonio Margarito. By next year, the Mexican slugger’s suspension will be over and he will be available to fight Mayweather. A fight with Margarito may be more palatable to Mayweather. He stands a great chance to beat him but definitely not the way he beat the Mexican lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez. Margarito may have lost to Mosley but he may also be out to prove that he learned from his mistakes and may take out his frustrations from being suspended on Mayweather making a Mayweather-Margarito fight very exciting. If Mayweather gets by Mosley and Margarito, then a great year-end fight for 2010 should be with Manny Pacquiao. A fight with Pacquiao will be a blockbuster. It could even be the fight of this generation and one that will wipe the slate clean and show who really is the best pound4pound. But arranging a Pacquiao-Mayweather tiff is easily said than done. We all know how Mayweather loves himself and his huge ego will prevent him from taking the back seat behind Pacquiao. Mayweather would surely ask for the bigger piece of the pie just like he did with Marquez. But that is not going to happen. And rightly so! Pacquiao now holds the p4p title vacated by Mayweather and he is no. 1. Therefore, if one is to get a bigger slice, it should be Pacquiao. Others may disagree with my assertions but that is just the facts. What he did to an over-matched Marquez notwithstanding, for Mayweather to solidly claim the p4p title again, he must convincingly earn it on top of the ring by beating Pacquiao. Then he can ask for everything he wants. No questions asked. Mayweather publicly say that he will fight anyone, but deep inside he may not want to fight Pacquiao. And he will give all the excuses not to make the fight happen - like asking for ridiculous purse split skewed in his favor. Then he will blame others for not making it happen. Contrary to his assertions that “all roads lead to Mayweather”, when the Pacman is concerned, the roads are not totally opened. Pacquiao is too risky. Pacquiao maybe smaller than Mayweather but if Mayweather fights him on a even basis and without coming in above the stipulated weight limit, he stands a chance of getting his ass kicked by the Filipino spitfire. So there they are-the best three fights Mayweather earned by beating an over-matched Marquez. The question is: Will Mayweather overcome his huge ego and take them one at a time for the benefit of boxing and the fans? I certainly hope so!
