MAYOL ASSURES FIGHT WITH CALDERON "WILL NOT BE BORING" By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 12 Jun 2009 Filipino Rodel Mayol has assured that his fight against WBO light flyweight champ Ivan Calderon "will not be boring" during the final press conference held yesterday in New York. Mayol challenges the unbeaten Calderon for the title in the chief support of a card headlined by the Miguel Cotto-Joshua Clottey showdown at the Madison Square Garden on Saturday (Sunday in Manila). Mayol was apparently trying to assure fans that with him fighting Calderon, there will be a real fight, and not just Calderon dancing around the ring for the whole twelve rounds. ?I would like to thank Top Rank for giving me the opportunity to fight at Madison Square Garden. This is my 3rd time fighting for a title and I?m going to try my best to win this fight. Everyone knows Ivan Calderon is a good boxer but many say his fights are boring. I will ensure that on Saturday night this fight will not be boring," Mayol told the media yesterday. Calderon, although unbeaten in 32 fights, only has 6 knockouts in his record, indicating the lack of power in his arsenal. ?He may say my fights are boring because you are used to see boxers hit and I?m never getting hit. I know it?s going to be a good fight. They trained and I trained hard for this fight. My style is hit, don?t get hit and go back home with no marks," Calderon countered. In contrast, Mayol has 25 wins with 19 stoppages for a very high knockout ratio. He has three defeats in his resume. Event promoter Bob Arum, who promotes Calderon, even once highlighted Calderon's lack of drawing power in an interview with Filipino mediamen during a stopover in Canada on his way to the Philippines. "Calderon is a nice kid. He's a great boxer. But he's the type you want to watch in the first four rounds, after which you want to go out and drink some beer," Arum had stated.
