OLIVA DECISIONS FLORES
By Edwin G. Espejo PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Mar 2009

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Jether Oliva bucked a sprained right wrist to coast to a unanimous win over durable Rogen Flores to retain his Mindanao Professional Boxing Federation (MPBF) light flyweight crown Saturday evening here.
Oliva scored the only knockdown in the fight with a punishing blow to the body of Flores who went down for a mandatory eight count in the third round.
Flores also hit the canvass in the second round but the referee ruled it was due to an accidental low blow.
In the seventh round, Oliva was deducted a one point for accidental head butt that caused a gash over the left eyebrow of Flores.
It was the second win by Oliva over Flores whom he stopped via technical decision in five rounds in February this year.
His record now stands 13-0 (win-loss) with nine of his victories coming by way of stoppage.
Oliva said he felt his wrist snapped midway through the bout but still managed to outclass Flores who went down in weight to fight the reigning Mindanao champion.
His trainer later said that Flores will resume campaigning in the flyweight division where he is also the reigning Mindanao champion.
In the supporting main event, Ray Las Pi?as and Arnold Montojo battled to a second round technical draw on account of a cut on the left eyelid of the latter due to an accidental clash of head.
The disappointing result left the Mindanao bantamweight crown vacant.
In the other bouts, Paul Apolinario made a smashing comeback by stopping journeyman War Bartiquil in the second round while Noel Adelmita edged veteran Michael Rodriguez over ten rounds via a split decision.
In the preliminaries, Weljan Ugbaniel kept his unblemished record by stopping Rey Morano in three rounds.
Randy Petalcurin made his professional debut a remarkable one by stopping Mcdo Lungay in the first round.
His stablemate Janjan Gello-ani bucked a second round knockdown to stop Alex Tubigon in the third round of his first professional fight.
