BOBBY PACQUIAO LOSES TO NABA CHAMP ROBERT FRANKEL
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 22 Nov 2008
Bobby ?The Sniper? Pacquiao sank deeper into eclipse of the shadow of his illustrious elder brother and reigning WBC lightweight champion Manny Pacquiao when he lost a ten round unanimous decision to North American Boxing Association lightweight champion Robert ?Red Hot? Frankel in San Jose, Friday, Manila Time.
The 27 year old southpaw dropped to 29-15-3 with 14 knockouts and his future is in doubt in terms of fighting quality opponents in the US.
With the win 28 year old Frankel improved to 26-9-1 with only 4 knockouts but after winning a ten-round split decision over Ramon Montano and then beating Pacquiao his stock is bound to improve.
It was Frankel?s seventh fight this year in which he has won five and lost two. Pacquiao on the other hand has lost back-to-back fights in the US including a crushing one-punch knockout that Pacquiao suffered against undefeated Urbano Antillon last March 13. There were hardly any details on the fight itself in which Filipino trainer Buboy Fernandez worked the corner of Pacquiao.
Boxing writer Mark Vester of Boxing Scene reported that Pacquiao was dominated in the fight held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California with all three judges scoring it by a lopsided 98-91 score.
Reports indicate that Frankel was beating Pacquiao to the punch during the entire contest, with big right hands leading the way. Even when Pacquiao appeared to be heading to a decision loss, he showed no urgency to pick up the pace or take the fight to Frankel.
Pacquiao who was disqualified in a fight against Hector Velasquezjo After receiving two earlier warnings for low blows, Pacquiao lost a point in the tenth for his third incident. Trainer Freddie Roach did not work his corner.
The Promoters behind the "Fight Night at the Tank" event had brought Pacquiao in to build a base of Filipino fans in the Bay area.
