GLENN DONAIRE BATTLES SOLIS; AIMS TO MAKE HISTORY

PhilBoxing.com

Glenn Donaire, born in General Santos City but now based in California, will attempt to make history today when he battles IBF light flyweight champion Ulises Solis in a 12-round battle at the Palenque de la Expo in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.

If successful, Donaire will join his younger brother Nonito Jr as the only brother tandem in Philippine boxing history to hold world crowns at the same time.

Brothers Dodie Boy and Gerry Penalosa have been world champions, but never won the titles at the same time.

"This is very important for me because I want my brother and I to become the first Filipino brothers to be world champions at the same time. The Penalosa brothers were both world champions, but they never held the titles at the same time. I want to get this for my dad. He trained my brother and I alone with no one?s help. This could bring recognition for my dad as well," Glenn Donaire told Mario Ortega of 15rounds.com.

At yesterday's weigh-in held at a mall close to the fight venue, both Donaire, who came in wearing a nicely-made red Arthro jacket, and Solis came in at an exact 108 lbs.

"My son is ready to go, and we are looking for a knockout," Nonito Sr, who trains both his sons, told Philboxing.com moments after the weigh-in yesterday.

?Ang feeling ko napakalaki nang chances natin, kasi Glenn is very strong right now and is very fast. Talagang ensayado siya? ( I feel our chances are really good because right now Glenn is very strong and very fast. He is really well-trained.), Donaire Sr told Philboxing.com.

Donaire will be the third Filipino in a row to challenge Solis. Solis previously defended his crown against Rodel Mayol (TKO in 8th) and Bert Batawang (TKO in 9th).

The Solis-Donaire title bout will air on Azteca America in the United States as the televised co-feature to the ten round light middleweight bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Matt Vanda.

IBF flyweight champ Nonito Donaire Jr, who sparred with his brother to help him prepare for the Solis fight, said that Glenn is in superb condition, and has a good chance of upsetting the reigning champion.

The younger Donaire told Philboxing.com that Glenn is ready to take on Solis and that the Mexican is not as tough as advertised despite his impressive record and that the reigning champ gets rocked when he gets hit.
