Jerusalem vs. Kuse II: High-Stakes Rematch in Johannesburg

PhilBoxing.com

The stage is set at the Emperor’s Palace for a high-altitude showdown as Filipino world champion Melvin “El Gringo” Jerusalem (25-3, 12 KOs) prepares to defend his WBC Minimumweight title against South African challenger Siyakholwa Kuse (9-3-1, 4 KOs) Saturday, May 16, 2026 in South Africa (early Sunday in Manila).

At Friday's official weigh-in, both fighters appeared in peak physical condition, easily making the 105-pound limit. The champion, Jerusalem, tipped the scales slightly lighter at 104.4 lbs, while the challenger, Kuse, weighed in at 104.7 lbs.

The importance of this championship bout was underscored by the presence of WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, who traveled to South Africa to oversee the proceedings. Sulaiman’s attendance highlights the global significance of the minimumweight division and the WBC's commitment to expanding its footprint in African boxing.

This bout is a direct sequel to their closely contested first meeting last October in Manila. In that fight, held during the "Thrilla in Manila 2" anniversary card, Jerusalem escaped with a narrow unanimous decision victory.

Since capturing the title from Yudai Shigeoka in Nagoya on March 31, 2024, Jerusalem has been a fighting champion. This marks his fourth defense of the green-and-gold belt, following successful unanimous decision victories over Luis Castillo, a rematch with Shigeoka, and the first clash with Kuse.

Jerusalem earlier held the WBO 105 world title belt in 2023 but lost it in his first defense against Oscar Collazo of Puerto Rico.

Tactical Breakdown: Turf vs. Technique

The rematch presents a classic "clash of advantages" that has fans and pundits split. Jerusalem has speed, ring IQ and experience while Kuse will bank on his height and reach advantage in addition to home crowd support.

Jerusalem arrived 3 weeks early for to accustomed to Johannesburg's high altitude air.

Psychologically the match will be Jerusalem's confidence from his previous win versus Kuse's hunger for redemption.

Kuse’s camp reportedly made a significant financial push to bring the champion to the Emperor’s Palace, betting that the home atmosphere will be the deciding factor in overturning the narrow margins of their first fight.

Jerusalem carries the weight of a nation on his shoulders as one of only two reigning Filipino world champions. Alongside IBF champion Pedro Taduran, who rules the same weight category, Jerusalem remains the standard-bearer for Philippine boxing on the world stage.

Will "El Gringo's" ring intelligence and veteran savvy be enough to silence the South African crowd, or will "One-Way" Kuse use his physical advantages to claim the throne in front of his countrymen?

The world will find out soon.
