NBA Daily: Doncic Shines as Lakers Topple Wembanyama and the Spurs 118-116

PhilBoxing.com

Tagbilaran City, Bohol – Superstar guard Luka Doncic stuffed the stats sheet with 35 points, 9 rebounds, 13 assists, 5 steals, and 2 blocks, to go along with 4 treys to rally the Los Angeles Lakers from 12 points down and eked out a 118-116 victory over Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs on Wednesday night (Thursday morning, Philippine time) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Deandre Ayton added a double-double of 22 markers and 10 boards, including 1 steal and 2 blocks. Marcus Smart and Rui Hachimura contributed 17 and 15 points, respectively for the Lakers, who finished the game on a 21-10 run.

French phenom Victor Wembanyama continues to struggle, finishing with 19 points on 5-for-14 field goal shooting and committed 5 turnovers. He also had 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block before fouling out with 1:39 left on the clock for the Spurs, who absorbed their second consecutive loss after winning their franchise record first five outings.

Wembanyama had ample support from his teammates, as six other Spurs scored at least 12 points. Jeremy Sochan, Lindy Waters III, and Kelly Olynyk played their first game this season and finished with 16, 6, and 4 respectively.

Austin Reaves sat out his second straight game due to a hamstring injury, while LeBron James was still out with a back issue.

Spurs primary backup center Luke Kornet is still recovering from his sprained ankle, while starting point guard De’Aaron Fox is nearing full recovery from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for all games, thus far this season. Second overall rookie pick and Filipino-American Dylan Harper is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks due to a strained left calf.

The Spurs will try to bounce back, as they host Texas rivals Houston Rockets in San Antonio on Friday night (Saturday morning, Philippine time).

Meanwhile, the Lakers will travel to Atlanta to face the Hawks on Saturday night (Sunday morning, Philippine time).
