SONNY BOY JARO WINS OPBF TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 23 Jun 2008 Sonny Boy Jaro has won the vacant Orient Pacific Boxing Federation light flyweight title with a split decision over Along Denoy in a fight card in Palawan. ?In this Corner? Television analyst Moy Lainez said it was a close fight but he felt Sonny Boy Jaro deserved to win. He said scoring referee Bruce McTavish, the respected international official had Jaro the winner along with Virgilio Garcia while the third judge, journalist Salven Lagumbay saw it in favor of Denoy. Lainez said Sonny Boy Jaro, a fighter of former boxer Aljoe Jaro ?dominated the early rounds? but that Denoy came back in the late rounds but ?the rally was little too late after Jaro faded.? Both fighters bled rather badly from cuts but there were no point deductions. In the double main event rugged Danilo Pena captured the Philippine super flyweight title with a eighth round TKO over Richard Olisa, another boxer from the Aljoe Jaro stable. Olisa lost the title he had won with a split decision victory over Eden Sonsona last April 21. The southpaw Pena improved to 12-4-1 with 7 knockouts while Olisa dropped to 18-5-1 with 11 knockouts. The win by 26 year old Sonny Boy Jaro raised his record to 28-6-5 with 17 knockouts while Denoy dropped to 17-7-1 with 9 knockouts. Jaro was coming off a fourth round TKO of Makoto Kido last February 29 while the 24 year old Denoy scored a sixth round technical decision in his last fight against Michael Rodriguez. Denoy had earlier won the WBO Asia Pacific light flyweight title with a fifth round TKO over Thailand ?s Kaichon Sor Vorapin.
