Playing white, Quizon agreed to a draw in 33 pushes of Sicilian Defense to raise his total to 7.5 points, the same output of Nogerbek, GM Emin Ohanyan of Kazakhstan and GM Luka Budisavljevic of Serbia. GM Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia defeated IM Rudik Makarian of Russia in 79 moves of Bogo-Indian defense to score 8.0 points and grab the solo lead going to the last round on Thursday. The 20th seed Quizon who will next play GM Ohanyan, aims to become the first Filipino world junior champion or surpass the third-place finish of Nelson "Jet" Mariano II in the 1994 edition of the tournament. The world junior stint of Quizon is being supported by Kamatyas Chess Club headed by NM David Almirol and IM Roderick Riataza Nava. Quizon, one of the top players of the star studded Dasmarinas Chess Academy under the guidance of mayor Jenny Barzaga, the late congressman Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga and national coach FM Roel Roel Alcana Abelgas, needs to raise his FIDE rating from 2448 to 2500 to complete his GM Title status. Quizon has already achieved the 3 GM norms requirement. However, if Quizon wins the World Junior crown, according to FIDE rules, he will get an outright GM title. After Round 10, Quizon got a plus elo standard rating of 13.4 points.-Marlon Bernardino- Click here to view a list of other articles written by Marlon Bernardino. |
