Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia---FIDE Master Yu Tian Poh of Malaysia won his 8th and penultimate round game Thursday to virtually clinch the 4th Penang Chess Open Championship 2024 at the St. Xavier's Institution in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.
Poh defeated with FIDE Master Christopher Castellano of the Philippines in their Sicilian skirmish to improve to eight points, two points ahead of a chase pack that include National Master Gerald Ferriol of the Philippines, Maximiliano Marrhuimawan of Indonesia and Arena International Master Chee Sian Sebastien Chua of Malaysia.
The 15-year-old Poh was playing Marrhuimawan at press time and regardless of the result would run away with the crown and the 2,500 Malaysian ringgit champion’s purse, in the FIDE week-long standard tournament, organized by Atty. See Swee Sie and Madam InHooi Teh of Penang Chess Association.
In other results, Ferriol, a chess instructor in Thailand, upset countryman 8-time Illinois, USA champion International Master Angelo Abundo Young, while Chua battled Marrhuimawan to a standoff.-Marlon Bernardino-
