Castellano bounces back in Penang Chess Open

Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia---FIDE Master Christopher Castellano bested Ting Han Choo of Malaysia Wednesday night, April 10, 2024, to bounce back into contention in the 4th Penang Chess Open Championship 2024 at the St. Xavier's Institution in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

His fourth win against one draw and a loss gave the fourth-seeded Castellano 4.5 points, 1.5 points behind pacesetter and top-seeded FIDE Master Yu Tian Poh of Malaysia, who toppled fifth-seeded National Master Gerald Ferriol of the Philippines in the sixth round.

Poh was at perfect 6.0 points, towing Castellano and fellow 4.5-pointers Maximiliano Marrhuimawan of Indonesia, Shanjay Ram Pragaesh, FIDE Master Chuin Hoong Ronnie Lim, Wei Yang Lim and Arena International Master Chee Sian Sebastien Chua of Malaysia.

"With still three rounds left, it’s still anybody’s race,” said Cainta, Rizal resident Castellano, who was beaten by Marrhuimawan in the third round and halved the point with Ferriol in the fifth round.

Other woodpushers contention heading into the last three rounds of the nine round FIDE standard rated tournament that offers 2,500 Malaysian Ringgit to the champion, organized by Atty. See Swee Siee and Madam InHooi Teh of Penang Chess Association are Ferriol, International Master Angelo Abundo Young and Arena Grandmaster Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. of the Philippines, Woman Candidate Master Jia-Tien Chua, and Loo Kai Jue Bryan of Malaysia who totes 4.0 points each.-Marlon Bernardino-
