PhilBoxing.com

Manila---International Master (IM) Jose Efren Bagamasbad and National Master (NM) Gerald Ferriol are expecting a rough sailing in the Penang International Open chess tournament where they will be meeting a tough line of competitors from from April 8 to 12, 2024 at the St. Xavier's Institution in Penang, Malaysia.

The FIDE Week-long Standard (90 minutes + 30 seconds increment) tournament offers 2,500 Malaysian Ringgit to the champion, organized by Atty. See Swee Sie and Madam In Hooi Teh of Penang Chess Association.

Tournament Director is IA Poay Sim Lim and assisted by Chief Arbiter IA Jin Hai Jonathan Chuah.

“It will be a very tough match against the Asian players (Malaysia, Indonesia, and Hongkong). Not to be outdone are players from the USA as well England," said Bagamasbad, the reigning back-to-back Asian Seniors (65 over category) champion.
Bagamasbad is also scheduled to compete in the Asian Seniors 50+ and 65+ Chess Championships 2024 to be held on July 1 to 10 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Bagamasbad won the Asian Seniors Chess Championships 65 over category in Auckland, New Zealand and Tagaytay City, Philippines, in 2022 and 2023, enough for a GM result, his first two of three.
To get an GM title, a player must achieve three required title norms over 27 or more games and a FIDE rating of 2500 or more.

“We are expecting tough matches but we will try our best for the flag and country,” said Ferriol, a chess teacher in Bangkok, Thailand.

Other Filipinos joining the competition are 8-time Illinois, USA champion International Master Angelo Abundo Young, FIDE Master Christopher Castellano, National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. and Candidate Master Jason Rojo.

Bannering the local challenge in the tournament are FIDE Master Yu Tian Poh, FIDE Master Chuin Hoong Ronnie Lim, Woman FIDE Master Kai Ni Agnes Chong, Woman Candidate Master Jia-Tien Chua, Siang-Zhe Chua and Looi Xin Hao of Malaysia.

Other notable participants are Nathanael Dieudonne B. Simanihuruk and Maximiliano Marrhuimawan of Indonesia, Jamison Edrich Kao of Hongkong, Martin Greenwood of England and Paul Eggers of USA.-Marlon Bernardino-
