Quizon eyes strong finish at Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA---International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon expects a strong showing at the Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023.
The 19-year-old freshman student at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas taking up Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS), who is former national champion, is working on formalizing his GM status.

The 11th edition of Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023 starts December 10 at Grandmaster Eugene Torre Museum of Pan de Amerikana in Concepcion Dos, Marikina City.

Quizon, the pride of Dasmariñas City, Cavite, is hunting to become the 18th Filipino GM in line with other well-known Pinoy GM in the country like Eugene Torre, Mark Paragua, and Wesley So.

"We are looking forward to a great performance in the Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023 in Marikina City. This will be another chance and opportunity for IM (Daniel) Quizon to complete his requirements and finally claim his title as a full pledged GM,” Daniel's coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas said.

Last Friday, Quizon topped the open division of the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship 2023 held at the Sabah Oriental Hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Quizon finished the 9-round open standard tournament with 7.5 points, the same output as FIDE Master (FM) Munkhdalai Amilal of Mongolia.

Quizon, however, outpointed the Mongolian in the tie-break to secure the win.

More importantly, Quizon's performance earned him another Grandmaster (GM) norm. He bagged his first GM norm when he won the championship in the 2018 Eastern Asia Juniors in South Korea that also gave him an outright IM title.

"I am happy to have won the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship 2023 - Open division in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. I wish that my luck would remain the same in my next tournament (11th edition of Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023)," said Quizon, who qualified to play for the Chess World Cup 2021 where he was defeated 1.5-0.5 by Russian born GM Evgeny Bareev in the first round.

Also plunging into battle of the 11th edition of Kamatyas Invitational GM Tournament 2023 are GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, GM Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam, GM Wei Ming Kevin Goh of Singapore and WIM Miaoyi Lu of China.

The champion in the FIDE Standard tournament jointly organized by International Master Roderick Nava and National Master David Almirol of Kamatyas Chess Club will receive $4,000 while the second placer to fifth placer will have $2,000, $1,000, $800 and $700. Sixth up to 10th placers will receive $500 each.

Joining Quizon bannering the local challenge in the tournament are GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, IM Joel Banawa and IM Michael Concio Jr.

Concio, another Dasmariñas bet, won the open division of the Blitz event of the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championship 2023.

In 2019, Concio won the Eastern Asia Juniors in Tanauan, Batangas clinching the IM title and a GM norm as well.

Quizon and Concio, both the top players of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the guidance of Dasmarinas Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.-Marlon Bernardino-
