WGM Janelle Mae Frayna joins India chess meet next year

MANILA---Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Janelle Mae Frayna seeks to improve her Fide ranking next year.

The 27-year-old Cum laude BS Psychology graduate student of Far Eastern University with an ELO rating of 2197 will be in a series of FIDE Standard tournament in abroad as part of her preparation for the upcoming 2024 World Chess Olympiad from September 10-23 at the renovated Hungexpo Exhibition and Conference Centre in Budapest, Hungary.

Frayna who is a native of Legazpi City, Albay, will be seeing in action in the 2nd Indore International Grand Master Chess Tournament 2024 on January 9-16 in Indore, India; 2nd Grand Master Chess Tournament 2024 January 9-16 in Bangalore, India and the 1st SOA International Grandmasters Chess Festival 2024 on Jan. 28 to Feb. 4 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

This was announced on Friday at the Book Signing Event of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach dubbed as Empowering Girls.
Frayna (Woman in Sports) is one of the guest speakers of the said event held at the Atrium Greenhills Mall in San Juan City.

"Through education and proper support from different sectors, we can eventually foster an environment that will encourage more girls, and more young women to learn chess, or any sport and turn it into a prosperous career or at the very least a lifelong passion. It’s only a matter of time, I know that more girls when guided and motivated correctly will surpass record after record," said Frayna, First Filipina Woman Grandmaster.

Joining Frayna are HCP Deegee M. de Guzman, President of RC Mandaluyong Uptown, DG Ronald "Pope" Solis, District Governor 3830, National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Legal Counsel Atty. Nikki de Vega, NCFP CEO National Coach Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, Woman International Master Bernadette Galas, Woman International Master Marie Antoinette San Diego, Woman Fide Master Rizalyn Jasmine Tejada, Woman National Master Bea Mendoza and Wena Escalicas.

This noble initiative of Rotary Club Mandaluyong Uptown, along with several other District 3800 Rotary Clubs, proudly announces a collaborative effort with Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach in Empowering Girls’ aimed at supporting the livelihood training of Mary of Christians – Calapan, specifically targeting the empowerment of fisherfolk’s wives, Out-of-School Youth (OSY), and the Mangyan community also brings female community leaders and known personalities like Sr. Ailyn Cayanan (Woman in Community Service and Vocational Training), philanthropist Dr. Mildred V. Vitangcol (Woman in Business) , DOT Region 12 Director King Arina (Woman in Government Service) , and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Legal Counsel Atty. Nikki de Vega (Woman in Legal Service) to shed light on Rotary International’s key area of focus this year: Empowering Girls.

Pia Wurtzbach, a well-respected advocate for various charitable causes, expressed her enthusiasm for being part of this project. “Empowering girls and supporting communities in need have always been close to my heart. I am honored to join hands with RC Mandaluyong Uptown and other District 3800 Rotary Clubs in this meaningful endeavor,” said Wurtzbach.

Rotary International’s commitment to empowering girls aligns seamlessly with the goals of this event. By focusing on providing opportunities for education, skill development, and sustainable livelihoods, the Rotary Clubs aim to make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need.
