Bacojo, Arca win in Round 5 of the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship

Montesilvano, Italy---FIDE Master Mark Jay Bacojo and FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca dominated their respective rivals but Woman National Master Franchesca Largo was held to a draw in the fifth round of the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy on Friday.

Bacojo toppled IM Timothe Razafindratsima of France in 26 moves of Sicilian Defense, Alapin Variation to climb to 6th to 13th places in the Boys under-18 section.

Arca, on the other hand, trounced Miraziz Kuziev of Uzbekistan in 60 moves of London System Opening, Jobava Variation to share 6th to 19th places in the Boys under-14 section.

But Largo found WFM Martyna Starosta of Poland a tough nut to crack, settling for a draw in 107 moves of Slav Defense to jump at 10th to 17th places in the Girls under-18 section.

Bacojo now has 4 points (4 wins and 1 loss) will meet GM Volodar Murzin of Russia in the sixth round, Arca tallied 4 points (3 wins, 2 draws) opposite Isak Vinh Brattgjerd of Norway while Largo got 3.5 points (3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss) versus WFM Ana Petricenco of Moldova.

Woman National Master Bonjoure Fille Suyamin defeated Amalie Zadrapova of Czech Republic in 58 moves of King's Indian Defense to score 3 points (3 wins and 2 loses) in the Girls under-14 section, the same output of Jirah Floravie Cutiyog, was also held to a draw by Oda Kofoed Skramstad of Norway in 74 moves of King's Indian Defense.

Suyamin will meet Guadalupe Montano Vicente of Mexico while Cutiyog opposite Jolie Huang of the USA.

Anica Shey also beat Ecaterina Comarnitcaia of Moldova for her 2.5 points in the Girls under-14 section and will test the mettle of Alexia Andries of Romania while Maureinn Lepaopao who got 1 point will face Lena Antenreiter of Austria.

Woman National Master Kaye Lalaine Regidor crushed Rowan Soraya Field of the USA to score 3 points in the Girls under-16 section and will square off with WCM Lia-Alexandra Maria of Romania in the next round.

Mark Gabriel Usman nipped Havir Adhya of Portugal for his 2 points in the Boys under-14 section, the same score of Charly Jhon Yamson, who yielded to Lionel Gut of Switzerland.

National Master Oscar Joseph Cantela was beaten by Rohan Padhye of the USA in the Boys under-16. section to remain at 2 points.
In the sixth round, Cantela goes up against FM Adrian Soderstrom of Sweden, Usman versus Melvin Ral Lustig of Sweden and Yamson opposite Giorgi Chanturia of Georgia.

Last Thursday, Arca subdued Dumanuly Sultanbeibarys of Kazakhstan in the ninth and final round to join Bacojo at the top of the standings in the just ended Blitz Rated tournament, a side event in the FIDE World Youth Chess Championship 2023 here at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy on Thursday.
Bacojo yielded to eventual champion Grandmaster Bayarsaikhan Gundavaa of Mongolia.

Gundavaa turned back Bacojo to seal the crown with a perfect 9.0 points.

Bacojo and Arca ended up tied at 5th to 10th places along with Oleksandr Vasnynda of Ukraine, IM Davit Zarkua of Georgia, FM Filip Magold of Norway and GM Ognjen Cvitan of Croatia.

Bacojo and Arca, landed at over-all 5th and 10th places in this FIDE rated blitz tournament which attracted 185 woodpushers.
Other members of the PH age group team were AGM Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. (Delegation Head and Coach), WFM Shaina Mae Mendoza (Coach) and AFM Ederwin Estavillo (Coach).

The Filipinos' campaign in Montesilvano, Italy is backed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

It is also supported by Cavite Vice Governor Athena Bryana Delgado Tolentino, General Trias City, Cavite Mayor Luis "Jon Jon" Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Porto Labuguen and OIC City Sports Jon Jon Comandante. -Marlon Bernardino-
