USA and Argentina will celebrate 100 years of Dempsey vs Firpo fight

PhilBoxing.com

The hundred years of "Firpo-Dempsey" symbolize an extraordinary date for world boxing and for Argentina.

This September 14, 2023, a commemorative bust of the match will be inaugurated on 8th Avenue, between 155th and 157th streets in New York. There was the majestic Polo Grounds stadium, which was as popular or more intense than Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium in everyday life in New York.

It is expected that former world champions Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes will be able to share the artistic piece of this tribute.

Likewise, the presence of the World Boxing Council and representatives of the state boxing Hall of Fame are expected.

It is expected that The New York Times will also be part of this tribute.

They will also remember the nostalgic evenings - boxing, football and baseball - spent at the Polo Grounds Stadium, demolished in 1964.

In the run-up to the festivities, the New York Secretary of Culture will probably offer a special lecture on the famous painting by George Bellows, an oil on canvas, made in 1924 that colors the climax scene of this match, exhibited at the Whitney Museum of Art in Manhattan's West Village. In addition, Jack Dempsey will be evoked in the passage that bears his name in the heart of the city: Broadway and 53rd street.

The descendants of both fighters will be guests of honor. Grandchildren of Dempsey and distant nephews of Firpo, residents of the “Blanca Lourdes” ranch - the name of the boxer's wife - in Carlos Casares, Buenos Aires.

The tribute to the month and day of the boxer in Argentina is celebrated on September 14 in recognition to the great figure of Firpo, imposing with his size, his strength and his image.

Until his death, on August 7, 1960, a victim of Chagas disease, every time he walked through the streets of Buenos Aires or entered the salons of high society, the immense figure (in the broadest sense of the word) Firpo exerted a strange magnetism among people. He was the founder of the glorious Argentine boxing, the beginning of everything that came after. The fight that made him a legend turns 100 years old. And the emotion is there, it is still intact.

In Argentina, the Union of Boxing Journalists of the Argentine Republic (UPERBOX) will hold the annual tribute to the best boxers in history this Thursday, September 14, during the delivery of the 2022 Firpo Awards in a ceremony that will mark one hundred years of Argentine boxing. and the presence of Marcos Chino Maidana, Jorge Locomotora Castro, Marcela Tigresa Acuña, Juan Martín Látigo Coggi, Julio César Zurdo Vázquez, Fernando Puma Martínez and Marcelo Toro Domínguez among others is expected.
