PH chess team loses to Poland in FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 03 Feb 2023 MANILA---Sixth-ranked Team Philippines lost to first-ranked Poland, 1.5-2.5, and fell to tie for the third spot after four rounds in the FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities at the Belgrade's Crown Plaza Hotel Wednesday in Belgrade, Serbia on Thursday. National Master Henry Roger Lopez suffered a setback against Fide Master Marcin Molenda in 53 moves of Slav defense at board two, while playing coach National Master James Infiesto fell to Pawel Piekielny in 69 moves of French defense at board three. National Master Darry Bernardo saved the day for the Filipinos with a win against International Master Piotr Dukaczewski in 51 moves of Caro kann defense at board four while Fide Master Sander Severino drew with Grandmaster Marcin Tazbir in 14 moves of Tarrash defense at the top board. "Talo tayo sa Poland. Sayang din laro ni Henry (Lopez) at check ko kung saan ako nagkamali," said NM Infiesto. The Filipinos remain at 6.0 match points (3 wins and 1 loss), the same output of Israel, IPCA, Cuba and Uzbekistan. Poland, meantime grabs the solo leadership board with perfect 8.0 match points, half point ahead of India who totes 7.0 match points after a 2-2 stand off against Hungrary. The Filipinos will tackle Israel’s team of GM Yehuda Gruenfeld, IM Andrei Gurbanov, FM Alexey Streltsov and WFM Aleksandra Aleksandrova in the fifth round of this six-round tournament that gathered the top 26 teams in the globe via their average rating. Poland, on the other hand will face India for the solo leadership board.
