Antonio wins; Young falters

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. played even better in his tenth game in the 30th FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championship (50+ and 65+ Open-men and women), turning back Fide Master Poul Rewitz of Denmark after 34 moves of Caro-Kann defense, held at the Hotel Cenacolo in Assisi, Umbria, Italy on Friday, Nov. 25.

Not everything was good news for local chess fans, though, with International Master Angelo Abundo Young failing to sustain the momentum of his Thursday draw over Antonio, bowing to Grandmaster Henrik Danielsen of Iceland.

With the win, the 60-year-old Antonio whose stint in Italy is being supported by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. , San Miguel Corporation and Sen. Bong Go, raised his total 7.0 points and climb at 7th to 13th places in the 50+ category.

The 59-year-old Young, an 8-time Illinois USA Champion, remains at 6.0 points and was dropped at 28th to 42nd places.

Grandmaster Ivan Morovic Fernandez of Chile dismantled Grandmaster Dejan Antic of Serbia after 32 moves of French defense to score 8.0 points and create a two-way tie for first place with top seed Grandmaster Zurab Sturua of Georgia, who drew with International Master Fabrizio Bellia of Italy after 36 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening.

Bellia, on the other hand, share 3rd to 6th places with GM Vladislav Nevednichy of Romania, GM Maxim Novik of Lithuania and GM Klaus Bischoff of Germany who totes 7.5 points each.
In the 11th and final round, Antonio will meet WGM Elvira Berend of Luxembourg while Young will face Jeroen Van Den Bersselaar of the Netherlands.

International Master elect and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad trounced Davis Lee of Wales to score 6.0 points.

The 66-year-old Bagamasbad will slug it out with IM Antonio Martorelli of Italy in the last round.

Meanwhile, GM Jens Kristiansen of Denmark toppled GM Vlastimil Jansa of Czech Republic to assume the solo lead with 8.5 points, half point ahead with top seed GM Dr. John Nunn of England, who split the points with GM Nikolay A Legky of France.
Kristiansen only loss to Bagamasbad in the second round.-Marlon Bernardino-
