NBA Daily: Spurs Young Guns Overwhelm Magic 123-97

PhilBoxing.com

Mandaue City, Philippines – The old reliables have moved on and the young guns are starting to show that they’re better for it. The San Antonio Spurs jumpstarted their 2021-2022 season via a resounding victory over the Orlando Magic 123-97 on Wednesday night (Thursday morning, Philippine time) at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The Spurs had seven guys in double figures, including all five starters. San Antonio once again showed an unselfish brand of basketball that the franchise has been known for, with a balanced attack. Their top two scorers Devin Vassell and Lonnie Walker IV weren’t even among the starters, with 19 and 17 respectively.

Their tenacious pressing defense led to 16 Magic turnovers. The backcourt combo of Dejounte Murray and Derrick White hounded their counterparts all night long, as both combined for 5 steals. Murray finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals, while White added 16 boards, 4 boards, 4 dimes, and 1 interception.

Playing a controlled up-tempo ball game, coach Gregg Popovich’s wards had 26 fastbreak points to just 6 that Orlando could muster. Jakob Poeltl was exceptional in this ballgame, stuffing the stats sheet with a near triple-double 12pt-13reb-7ast production across his name.

Mo Bamba, with his vastly improved shooting, led the way for Orlando with his team high 18 points on a 6-for-8 field goal shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep, 4 boards, 4 dimes, 1 steal, and 4 blocks.

Up next for the Spurs are the New York Knicks in San Antonio on Friday night (Saturday morning, Philippine time).

Meanwhile, the Magic will be at Denver to face the Nuggets on the same night.

How They Scored:

Spurs 123 – Vassell 19, Walker IV 17, White 16, Murray 16, Johnson 16, Poeltl 12, Bates-Diop 7, Jones 4, Primo 3, Eubanks 2, Landale 1

Magic 97 – Bamba 18, Ross 15, Carter Jr. 13, F. Wagner 12, Anthony 10, Suggs 10, M. Wagner 7, Hampton 6, Lopez 4, Brazdeikis 2
