Barcenilla, Bagamasbad power Laguna past Caloocan in PCAP chess tilt

MANILA, Philippines---Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad powered the Laguna Heroes to a 11-10 victory over a International Master Paulo Bersamina-led Caloocan Loadmanna Knights in the third conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform Wednesday, September 22, 2021.

Barcenilla, a many-time Battle of the GMs champion, defeated fellow Olympiad veteran Bersamina in 55 moves of King's Indian defense, Gligoric System while Bagamasbad toppled International Master Domingo Ramos in 34 moves of King's Indian defense, Four Pawns Attack variation to help propel the Heroes to a share of second with Pasig City King Pirates with identical 4-1 win-loss records, a full game behind the San Juan Predators (5-0).

"The Laguna Heroes started the day with a stellar outing against Rizal Batch Towers, 16.5-4.5, and finished the day with another win against Caloocan Loadmanna Knights, 11-10," said Arena Grandmaster Dr.Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.

The Loadmanna Knights slipped to 1-4 mark in the Northern Conference alongside Olongapo Rainbow Team 7, Cavite Spartans and Cagayan Kings.

After their blitz encounter ended in a 5-2 victory in favor of Loadmanna Knights, Barcenilla and Bagamabad struck the hardest for Heroes in dominating the rapid phase, 9-5, and claiming the win.

Also delivering for Laguna were Grandmaster John Paul Gomez, Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo and Vince Angelo Medina.

Gomez beat Fide Master Nelson Villanueva in 40 moves of Slav defense, Literatus split the point with International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia in 62 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening, Lorenzo settled a truce with International Master Barlo Nadera in 35 moves of French defense while Medina halved the point with Paul Sanchez in 86 moves of Caro-Kann defense.

Woman National Master Arvie Lozano provided the full point for Loadmanna Knights in the rapid competition by beating Michella Concio in 61 moves of Italian Game.

Backed up by Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, KALARO and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes also beat Rizal Batch Towers, 16.5-4.5.
Other fifth-match results saw Manila edging Rizal, 11.5-9.5, San Juan beating Cavite, 16-5, Isabela besting Cagayan, 13.5-7.5, and Pasig trouncing Olongapo 17-4.

Up next for the Heroes are the Cagayan Kings and the Cavite Spartans on Saturday.

Meanwhile, defending champion Iloilo Kisela Knights haven’t skipped a beat as they recorded their fifth straight win and grabbed a similar 18.5-2.5 victories against the Camarines Soaring Eagle and Cebu City Marchers in the Southern Conference.

Negros Kingsmen, on the other hand, got a bye in the fourth match then subdued Palawan Queen's Gambit, 19.5-1.5 for their fourth straight win in as many rounds.-Marlon Bernardino-
