SPORTS SHORTS 218: JONAS SULTAN CLASHES WITH KO SPECIALIST CARLOS CARABALLO OF PUERTO RICO

PhilBoxing.com

Jonas Sultan will face deadly Carlos Caraballo, the undefeated fighter who has knocked out all his opponents. Caraballo, age 25 years of Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, has a perfect record of 14-0 with 14 KOs.

Jonas Sultan, age 29 years from Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte, with 17-5, 11 KOs, is unfazed by his opponent's ring record. He will exchange blows with the Puerto Rican marvel on October 30 in New York City.

* * *

Sultan, who is now managed by MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons, was slated to fight Gary Antonio Russell but the match did not happen. Instead his next bout will be set against Caraballo, who has not fought beyond five rounds.

* * *

Sultan has enough training in the United States under Jorge Capetillo in Las Vegas and Marvin Somodio in Hollywood, to prepare for the toughest opponent he would battle so far.

* * *

He last fought Sharone Carter at the Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, California, whom he stopped in the seventh round on August 14 in the John Riel Casimero vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux undercard and was elevated to No. 9 in the World Boxing Association bantamweight rankings.

* * *

Sultan also defeated World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Casimero in a title eliminator but lost to International Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas by unanimous decision when they tangle on May 26, 2018 at the Save Mart Center, Fresno, California.

Caraballo is promoted by fellow Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto, as he knocked out Mexican Leonardo Baes in the fourth round on March 25. “I am 100% sure that I am the most distinguished prospect on the island,” Caraballo told Boxing Scene. “My goal was to go in there and get a couple rounds in, and I got it done.”

* * *

Caraballo sent Baez crashing to the canvas with a thundering series of three left hands in the second round. He got up and the Mexican pressed Caraballo in the third and fourth rounds.

* * *

But Baez was again pummeled by Caraballo's dreaded left hands until the corner threw in the towel and referee Roberto Ramirez stopped the punishment at 2:36 of the fourth of their scheduled eight round super bantamweight match.

* * *

Sultan will stay in the United States and wait for his next fight and let his momentum stay on until the next fight in the United States. He was inactive for two years since stopping countryman Salatiel Amit on August 17, 2019 at the Ormoc City Superdome but showed no decline in getting rid of Carter by 7th round TKO.

* * *

In his vacant time, Sultan assists in the training of Jimuel Pacquiao, eldest child of eight-division world champion and senator Manny Pacquiao, in his preparations for a fight with YouTuber Boy Tapang this month. Sultan shadow-boxed then sparred with the young Pacquiao at the Wild Card Boxing Club.

Jonas Sultan made his professional debut on March 17, 2013 against Glenn Campaner in the bantamweight division in Davao City, where Sultan won via a unanimous decision. On February 27, 2016, Sultan went to Japan to challenge Tatsuya Ikemisu and won by TKO in round 2.

* * *

On December 26, 2016, Sultan conquered South Africa by challenging and winning by second round TKO hometown hero super flyweight prospect Makazole Tete, that time the IBF intercontinental super flyweight champion. He was Zolani's brother.

* * *

Sultan won over former WBC, The Ring and lineal world flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro by 8th round KO at the Angono Sports Complex, Barangay Mahabang, Angono, Rizal to retain his IBF intercontinental super flyweight title.

World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has negatively commented on last Saturday's boxing match between Evander Holyfield and Vitor Belfort, which was a Triller pay-per-view event in Hollywood, Florida.

* * *

The 58-year-old Holyfield, a former two-weight undisputed light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, fought for the first time after being inactive in over a decade.

* * *

The 44-year-old Belfort, a former UFC champion, is one of the hardest hitters in MMA and when he climbed the ring he annihilated the aging Hall-of-Famer who substituted Oscar De La Hoya who withdrew from the fight due to Covid-19.

* * *

"What happened last Saturday was reality realization; thank goodness there was no serious injury... The great legendary champion Evander Holyfield was embarrassed, in just 90 seconds, by a retired mixed martial arts rival," Sulaiman said as quoted by Boxing Scene.

* * *

"It is a blessing that everyone has seen the reality. You can't play boxing. Former boxers must not return to the ring to fight. The exhibitions are acceptable, as they are with important security measures, but fighting without a head gear and competitively cannot happen," continued Sulaiman.

LeBron James may be only a few years from breaking one of the NBA's most coveted records, the all-time scoring list. Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar told NBA reporter Marc Stein that he would like to see James surpass his NBA all-time scoring record of 38,387 points.

* * *

"I’m excited to see it happen. I don’t see records as personal accomplishments, but more as human achievements.... We all win when a record is broken and if LeBron breaks mine, I will be right there to cheer him on," said Kareem in Yahoo Sports.

* * *

The 36-year-old James currently is third on the NBA's all-time scoring list, overtook Kobe Bryant in the 2019-20 season. After last season, James has 35,367 career points in the regular season, which is 3,020 points shy of Abdul-Jabbar's record. Utah Jazz star Karl Malone is still ahead of him at second with 36,928 points.
