PhilBoxing.com

Eurmir Marcial raises hand in victory after defeating Younes Nemouchi of Algeria yesterday, Thursday, in Japan.

Pre-tournament predictions held as fancied gold medal winner Eumir Felix Marcial of the Philippines and his main rivals for the top honors in the men's middleweight class all won and advanced to the quarterfinals of the continuing 2020 Tokyo Olympics boxing competitions at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

Marcial led the Round of 16 winners in the division by scoring the lone stoppage of the day over Younes Nemouchi of Algeria before the end of the first round of their scheduled three round bout. The Filipino decked Nemouchi and cut him in the eye area which bled profusely forcing the referee to halt the fight and declare Marcial winner by referee stop contest or RSC.

Marcial will meet in the quarterfinals set August 1, Monday, Arman Darchinyan of Armenia who defeated Andrej Scemez of Slovakia 5-0, losing semi finalist in the European qualifier to Russian Gleb Bakshi. Marcial has previously beaten Darchinyan in the finals of an international tournament held in Russia in 2018.

Bakshi, the 2019 world championship gold winner over Marcial also advanced by 3-2 split decision win over American Troy Isley, one of the tournament's dark horses. The Russian will face another American Olympic qualifier Darelle Valsaint who eliminated David Tshama of the Democratic Republic of Congo 5-0 also yesterday.

Also advancing are world rated number one Oleksander Khrysniak of Ukraine who ousted the host's Yuito Morikawa 5-0 and Abilkhan Amankul of Kazakhstan who defeated Fanat Kakharamanov of Uzbekistan by unanimous 5-0 decision.

Khrysniak will face Euri Cedeno of Colombia who won over Francisco Veron of Argentina 3-2 while Amankul is ranged against Hubert Conceicao Souza of Brazil, another 3-2 winner over Tuohutaerbeike Tanglahian of Mongolia, another familiar Marcial foe.

Marcial will need another victory to barge into the medal round.

Meanwhile, in another action yesterday, Filipino women's flyweight bet Irish Magno failed to advance when she unexpectedly lost by 5-0 decision to familiar foe, Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand who she had defeated in the semifinal of the 2019 Manila SEA Games.

In an another upset at women's flyweight, highly favored Mary Kom of India lost her match to Ingrit Valencia of Spain 3-2. Japanese Tsukimi Namiki however advanced by defeating Grazielle Jesus de Sousa of Brazil 5-0.

Tomorrow, two more Filipino boxers will see action, primarily women's featherweight Nesthy Petecio who tries to advance to the gold medal round as she takes on Irma Testa of Italy in the semifinals. In the other semis, familiar foe Sena Irie of Japan will cross mitts with Kriss Artingstall of the UK.

The other Filipino, Carlo Paalam tries to advance to the quarterfinals in the men's flyweight division against Mohammed Flissi of Algeria. Paalam had won previously against two time Olympian Brendan Irvine of Ireland.
