SPORTS SHORTS 94: DONNIE NIETES AND PABLO CARRILLO NOW IN DUBAI

PhilBoxing.com

The longest-reigning Filipino world champion Donnie Nietes said he is elated to be back to action during the press conference of their fight in Dubai. "I'm so happy and excited that finally for the first time since 2018 I will be able to get back in the ring and fight," stated Nietes.

* * *

He added that this is the best time to come back with the guidance of D4G Promotions and MTK Global. He also praised his foe Pablo Carrillo. "Pablo is a good guy and he knows how to fight, but this will be an exciting performance from me. The pandemic and COVID doesn't hinder my dreams to continue in boxing."

* * *

Because he was given this opportunity to make a comeback he wants to win it and then fight the world champions in the super-flyweight division. He is targeting the best fighters in the super flyweight division after hurdling his Colombian opponent.

* * ,

Carrillo had this to say: "I'm excited to fight in Dubai and excited to be fighting with such a great champion, but I am a champion too. I have a lot of experience with previous fighters and champions, and that has prepared me not only for this fight, but to remain motivated and hungry in my career."

* * *

He said he is foremost very grateful for the opportunity to come to Dubai for the match, thanking the sponsors and organizers. He promised to produce a good fight for everybody's satisfaction.

* * *

Former ALA Gym trainer Edmund Villamor, now the reliable coach of four-division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, guaranteed that the former world titlist is well-trained with adequate preparation for his ring comeback on April 3 in Dubai, UAE.

* * *

Nietes is scheduled to fight Pablo “El Trencito” Carillo for the vacant WBO international super flyweight title in the undercard of Jamel Herring vs. Carl Frampton for the WBO super featherweight title showdown at the Caesar’s Palace Dubai.

* * *

Alias "El Trencito" which means the train, 32 years old, from Valledupar, Colombia, is an orthodox fighter. Carrillo is ranked No. 8 by the World Boxing Association and his ring record of 25-7-1 with 16 KOs.

* * *

Villamor told Cebu Daily News that they have studied the fighting style and the favorite punch of the Colombian Pablo Carrillo. He said that they reviewed the fight tapes of Carillo right after the promoters announced that they were changing the Filipino's opponent from Panamian Orlando Penalba to Carrillo two weeks ago.

* * *

He added that Donnie Nietes has easily adjusted the change in style. They viewed the fights of the opponent. And they had a very nice training for this fight.

* * *

Villamor and Nietes arrived in Dubai, UAE, last March 30 and they rounded off their training camp at the Round 10 Boxing Gym.

* * *

For Villamor, he is as excited and ecstatic as Nietes to step inside the ring after a two-year and three months hiatus. The last time Nietes and Villamor teamed up was on New Year’s Eve of 2018. At that time, they were both under the banner of the legendary ALA Boxing Gym, which was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic.

* * *

Villamor was excited and very happy that he returned back to the corner of Nietes. Villamor was Nietes’ cornerman during his last fight when he won the vacant WBO world super flyweight title against Japanese Kazuto Ioka via split decision in Macao, China.

* * *

Nietes devoted most of his time training at the Villamor Brothers Boxing Gym, which is owned and managed by Edmund and his brother Edito Villamor, ALA's former head trainer and matchmaker.

* * *

The 38-year old Nietes of Murcia, Negros Occidental, with a career record of 42 wins, one defeat, five draws with 23 knockouts, kept his body in shape despite his long inactivity, mainly due to the Villamor brothers’ technical assistance.

* * *

Even if he has a bigger chance of dominating the fight, Villamor said they would not be over confident because Carillo is a, dangerous foe. Carillo has a record of 25-7-1 with 16 knockouts.

* * *

Carillo has fought tooth and nail against Nietes’s two fiercest adversaries in Japanese Kazuto Ioka and Mexican Francisco Rodriguez Jr. in 2014 and 2018, respectively. Though he lost to both fighters, but he fought them well and they are world champions.

Andre Drummond’s first game with the Los Angeles Lakers was shortened due to an injured right toe that saw him limping to the locker room. He scored only four points in 14 minutes on the court then left the arena early in the third quarter after playing with the toenail on his big right toe peeled off.

* * *

It happened in the first quarter when Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez stepped on Drummond’s foot, but Drummond said he did not notice the degree of the injury until halftime, when it was too painful for him. The Bucks defeated the Lakers, 112-97.

Just before the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the founder of Adidas athletic shoe company Adi Dassler visited Owens in the Olympic village and offered Owens to wear Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik shoes. This was the first sponsorship in history for a male African American athlete.

* * *

On August 3, Owens won the 100 m dash with a time of 10.3 seconds, defeating teammate and college friend Ralph Metcalfe by a tenth of a second. On August 4, he won the long jump with a leap of 8.06 metres (26 ft 5 in), which is 3¼ inches short of his own world record.

* * *

On August 5, he won the 200 m dash with a time of 20.7 seconds, defeating teammate Mack Robinson. On August 9, Owens won his fourth gold medal in the 4 × 100 m sprint relay as they set a world record of 39.8 seconds in the event.

* * *

Owens' amazing record performance of four gold medals was not equaled until Carl Lewis won gold medals in the same events at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
