SPORTS SHORTS 71: THERE WILL BE NO MANNY PACQUIAO VS. RYAN GARCIA ANYTIME SOON

PhilBoxing.com

The fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ryan Garcia will not be realized any time soon. "KingRy" Garcia published it on his Instagram, Tuesday, posting an announcement in his IG Stories.

* * *

"To all my fans and supporters my fight with Manny Pacquiao is not happening right now," Garcia posted. "I tried my best after getting the call to fight him but didn't happen due to some issues I didn't expect to come up but I'm already working on the next fight," he added.

* * *

"I will always see Manny as an inspiration and someone who is a legend and I respect," Garcia said. "Wish the best for him in life and boxing."

* * *

Garcia announced the proposed fight in January and Pacquiao's camp confirmed negotiations were ongoing in February. Garcia said it was his dream that if he beats Tank Davis and then end up getting a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao before he gets to go because he’s one of Ryan's idols.

* * *

The 22-year-old WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia is from Victorville, California, United States, and has a perfect record of 21-0 with 18 knockouts. He has fought 67 rounds and has a KO rate of 85.71% per BoxRec.com.

* * *

Former eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao is too strong for Ryan Garcia at this stage of his budding boxing career. It is the opinion of former Pacquiao foe and WBO ex-champion Chris Algieri, who predicted Garcia’s fall if the fight is going to happen now.

* * *

“From the things I saw in the Luke Campbell fight, Manny would be able to capitalize very well, and if Manny puts you down, you’re not getting up,” said Algieri to Fino Boxing. "The thing about someone like Ryan Garcia is his progression from fight to fight is exceptional."

* * *

Algieri added that we could not determine exactly what level is Ryan Garcia's going to show when he comes to fight because he is getting better every fight.

* * *

But Pacquiao is no longer considering Garcia as an opponent, as he told to TMZ. “Manny came to offer me the fight. I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao, but that’s on him. That’s on him" said Garcia.

* * *

It seems Garcia is running out of opponents, as none of the big name fighters talked about previously will be realized. Undisputed champion Teofimo Lopez now has a mandatory fight in George Kambosos.

* * *

Devin Haney is looking at Jorge Linares or Vasyl Lomachenko. Gervonta Davis is not interested in facing Garcia. And there will be no Manny Pacquiao vs. Ryan Garcia fight any soon.

* * *

Ryan Garcia considers Saul "Canelo" Alvarez as an idol. He and Canelo are both trained by Eddy Reynoso. Garcia was at ringside at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida when Canelo destroyed Avni Yildirim in three rounds to retain the WBC, WBA super middleweight titles.

* * *

Canelo was also at the ringside in January in Dallas,Texas watching Garcia score an astounding knockout of 2012 Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell.

* * *

Garcia does not see any boxer out there in the 168-pound division who could beat Canelo. "He has confidence on another level. It's beyond confidence. It's just knowing," Garcia told DAZN.

* * *

Ryan said Canelo wants to create history and he wants to do something that is going to live on. He added that Canelo is looking to beat everyone who wants to face him. Garcia doesn't think there's a single person Alvarez can't beat.

* * *

He also expressed his displeasure with the performance of Yildirim, whom Canelo outgunned from the very first round. He said the Turkish was like a deer in the headlights and he couldn't move and Canelo boxed the way he wanted to do, the perfect fight.

The NBA named the 15 players who will be participating in the other events besides the All-Star Game in Atlanta, with the great majority of them taking part in those competitions and the main game.

* * *

Golden State's Stephen Curry and Phoenix's Devin Booker who were 3-point champions, the Boston pair of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, Chicago's Zach LaVine and Utah's Donovan Mitchell, all All-Star players, will be the six shooters in the 3-point contest.

* * *

All-Stars Luka Doncic of Dallas, Domantas Sabonis of Indiana, Julius Randle of New York, Nikola Vucevic of Orlando and Chris Paul of Phoenix together with Portland's Robert Covington are the six contestants of the skills competition.

* * *

The only event that will not have any All-Star player is the dunk contest, which will include first-timers Anfernee Simons of Portland, Cassius Stanley of Indiana and Obi Toppin of New York.

* * *

The dunk contest will be two rounds and judged by five former dunk champions: Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, Dee Brown, Jason Richardson, Josh Smith and Spud Webb. It will be held at halftime of the All-Star Game, while the skills competition and 3-point contest will be conducted before the game.
