Will Mike Tyson be back in 2021? PhilBoxing.com Fri, 29 Jan 2021 Mike Tyson (L) and Roy Jones (R) during the weighin of their exhibition fight. It’s hard to know what to feel when you see stories of Mike Tyson returning once more to the boxing ring, should it be inspiration or sadness? One can’t help but lean towards the latter given that the heavyweight boxing ring is no country for old men. Tyson, who has done a great amount in recent years to improve his image and regain his health, is once again putting it all on the line in order to secure a few last paydays that you would imagine will afford him the chance of a comfortable retirement. Although there are strong rumours that Tyson’s net worth does range into the single-digit millions -suggesting he is hardly living a hand-to-mouth existence - it is still light years away from the estimated $685 million he supposedly made in career earnings. He could, however, be taking a big step towards those types of numbers again by agreeing to fight Evander Holyfield in 2021. Holyfield has already said that the fight will reach in the region of $200 million should it go ahead, but is this really a match-up anyone wants to see? Does boxing actually still need Mike Tyson in terms of entertainment? After all, the last time these two fought was 24 years ago and few need reminding of how that ended. But let’s go back into the archives and see if this is a fight that will provide boxing fans with any lasting memories.
Third time lucky for Iron Mike? As it happens, Mike Tyson has fought Evander Holyfield twice previously and has never managed to win. The first time was in 1996 when Holyfield managed an 11th round TKO against a beleaguered Tyson. Naturally, a rematch was hastily arranged and just seven months later these two squared up against each other in Las Vegas for the WBA Heavyweight title. It was during the third round that Tyson bit Holyfield on the ear and in doing so made sure that the world would always remember him for not only his ferocious boxing ability but also the unsavoury incidents of that summer night in late June. This fight could be marketed as a blockbuster given the history between these two. But as for bad blood, Holyfield has previously said that he has forgiven Tyson and does not hold a grudge against the 54-year-old for that moment of madness in 1997. With this in mind, you fear that this bout could go the same way as Tyson’s first comeback fight in 2020 that ended in a draw against Roy Jones Jr. Will this bout resemble a boxing match? To be fair to Tyson, he did put in a lively display that should have been deemed enough to beat Jones Jr but the unofficial judges on the evening scored the eight-round bout as a draw. But then again, the no-knockout clause that was inserted into the pre-fight contract left many thinking that the only way this fight could end was in a draw.
Once the fight is announced, sports betting sites and the accompanying guides to sports betting will be able to give punters more of an accurate idea of what might happen when the odds are released for each fighter. Indeed, thousands will benefit from the experience and subsequent tips that these sites provide as we build up to the third instalment of Tyson vs Holyfield. At 58-years-old, though, and with Holyfield’s last fight almost nine years ago, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where Tyson will be the favourite - he has been active as recently as 2020. The world will almost certainly see Mike Tyson back in the ring in 2021, with these ‘comeback fights’ looking to be more and more of a regular occurrence. That said, there is probably only so much interest that these exhibition fights can garner when you consider that the world is itching to see Anthony Joshua fight Tyson Fury in 2021. Indeed, there is real history on the line for the younger kings of the division so ageing Mike better strike whilst the iron is hot. |
