Ivan Travis Cu sweeps BATCH online chess tourney

Manila, Philippines -- Philippine chess wizard Ivan Travis Cu of San Juan City asserted his supremacy by topping the BATCH-Barangays Achieving Through Chess Kiddies Under-12 Online Rapid (15 minutes) Chess Tournament dubbed as Search for Kid Grandmaster last Sunday, November 29, 2020.

The 11-year-old Cu, a grade six pupil of Xavier School under the guidance of coach Rolly Yutuc, finished with a perfect 7 points in seven outings, in this event organized by BATCH founder and former NCFP director Eduardo "Ed" Madrid, national arbiters Boyet Tindugan Tardecilla and Alvin Yen.

Cu’s big wins were against Yaneah Sofia Tanguilan Morada of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (first round), Kayla Lorraine Aurelio of Pangil, Laguna (second round), Ryien Bahita of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental (third round), Cyrus James Damiray of Tanza, Cavite (fourth round), Cassey Migue lTabamo of El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental (fifth round), Gabriel Ryan Paradero of Pasig City (sixth round) and Dennis Jocel Mendoza of Mandaluyong City (seventh round).

Claiming the second to third places, respectively, were Pat Ferdolf Macabulos of Mabatang, Bataan and Cyrus James Damiray of Tanza, Cavite, both finished with 5.5 points.

Sharing the limelight is Jericho Winston Cu, younger brother of Ivan Travis, who beat Jaycol Sodela in the final round to raise his total to 5 points. He was tied at fourth to 12th places.

It shall be recalled that Siblings Ivan Travis and Jericho Winston Cu brought the country much honor despite being first time in the international chess arena after spearheading Philippines kids chess team into victory of 36th Singapore National Age Group Chess Championships held at the Expo MAX Atria last Dec. 27–30, 2019.

Ivan Travis Cu defeated Oscar Gao (elo 1595) of Australia in the eight and final round to finish second place in the Boys 10 and under. Ivan Travis who amassed seven wins and one loss got a total performance of 1622 for his effort.

Jericho Winston Cu was at eighth place in the Boys 9 and under who totes 5.5 points after beating Shravan Shetty Kashyap of India in the last round.-Marlon Bernardino--
