TALAPE AND BARCELONA DEFEND TITLES; SUELO, NEW PBF CHAMPION

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA -- The action packed 3-championship boxing event titled ?Labanan Ng Mga Matatapang? (Fight of the Courageous) Thursday night held at the packed Mandaluyong covered court in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila was a resounding success.

The event featured 2 10-round fights for the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) Championships in the Super Flyweight and Bantamweight divisions and the defense of the RP Super Bantamweight title.

RP Super Bantamweight Champion Jun Talape held his ground and showed to the eager and excited Mandaluyong City crowd why he deserves the title by defeating challenger Roel Laguna in a David-Goliath type of a fight. It was Talape?s first title defense of the title he wrested from former champion Jake Verano last year.

Laguna was the bigger and taller fighter enjoying a clear reach advantage.

All Talape did was to get close and attack Laguna?s body employing his noted hit-and-run tactic, always bobbing and moving from side to side to avoid Laguna?s counter-attack. This is usually the tactic a fighter uses when fighting a much bigger opponent and it requires good conditioning since ?using the ring? easily demands much energy.

Laguna had his moments too. There were times when he used his advantages really well in attacking Talape with combinations while at the same time keeping a safe distance to avoid Talape?s counterpunches. But although he connected a lot, many of his shots were slap-type punches. The judges look for effective punches using the knuckles in their scoring.

In the 6th round, Talape suffered a cut at the back of his head after a clash of heads. Laguna also bled from his left eyebrow from an accidental head butt in the 8th and another above his right eyebrow in the 11th. The cuts were not serious though for the ring physician to stop the fight.

Danny Pe?a was like a fish out of the water when he challenged PBF Bantamweight champion Eric Barcelona in their 10-round fight.

Both fighters engaged in a wrestling/boxing type of match especially in the early rounds. Pe?a ran out of steam early in the fight because he was always getting hit and at the same time missing with his punches.

The veteran Barcelona was always a step quicker in avoiding Pe?a?s bull rushing tactics while landing combinations to the face and body. It was like Pe?a didn?t know what he was doing because he was just lunging and clinching while getting repeatedly hit by Barcelona?s effective shots.

Barcelona, who once drew with world title contender Z Gorres, won by Majority Decision as two judges scored it 97 ? 92 and 98 ? 91 for Barcelona while the third scored it 95 ? 95.

Ni?o Suelo is now the new PBF Super Flyweight Champion after scoring a KO win over Daniel Diolan in their 10-round fight. Diolan was leading in the scorecards when Suelo?s two successive left uppercuts hit Diolan?s right abdominal muscle area sending the fighter grimacing in pain to the canvass. Diolan failed to get up as the referee reached the count of 10. The end came at 27? in the 6th round.

Other results:

Renan Dioso scored a KO win 2?11?? in the 3rd when his left consecutive uppercuts connected to opponent Elmar Francisco?s body in their 8-round fight in the 110-lb division.

Roel Lagunero was like a raging bull when he fought Keeward Mi?osa in their minimum weight division match. Lagunero kept banging away at Mi?osa. In the 3rd, Mi?osa was deducted a point for dropping his mouthpiece twice. He was also warned in the 4th when he ran and hid behind the referee. Lagunero was awarded a TKO win when the referee stopped the fight 1? 38? in the 6th because Mi?osa wasn?t fighting back. He was clearly hurt. The fight was scheduled for 8 rounds.

Johary Rosia won by Majority Decision over opponent Marco Niones in their 6-round match at 116 lbs. The scores were 57 ? 57, 58 ? 56, and 60 ? 56 for Rosia.

Smelvin Bujas got lazy and lost by Unanimous Decision to Jayson Geda. Geda was the busier and more effective fighter. All three judges scored the fight 60 ? 54 for Geda. The fight was scheduled for 6 rounds at 113 lbs.

BJ Dolorosain won by Unanimous Decision over Bonny Maido in their 6-round match in at 110-lbs. Maido was bloodied as he got cut in the 1st on his left eyebrow by a punch and another in the right eyebrow from a head butt in the 3rd.

Eljune Leonardo won by TKO over Mauricio Caraville. The referee stopped the fight at 2?49? in the 4th after Caraville fell twice. It was a light flyweight division match scheduled for 6.

The fight between Martin Brencis and Warren Fuentes ended in a Majority Draw as two judges scored it 38 ? 38 while the other one ha it 40 ? 36 for Brencis. The fight was scheduled for 4 rounds in the minimum weight division.
