ARUM SAYS MAYOL HAS BEEN PAID
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 16 Feb 2008
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says Michael Koncz was not to blame for the snafu over non-payment of Rodel Mayol?s purse for his fight with undefeated Adrian Hernandez whom he lost to by a fourth round knockout last Saturday in Mexico.
In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Arum clarified that under the agreement with his Mexican partner Fernando Beltran, Top Rank would ?pay all the American and Filipino fighters and he would pay the Mexicans.? However, Arum said ?it got screwed up so Michael didn?t get a check for Mayol which we rectified today.?
Arum insisted ?that wasn?t Michael?s fault it was our internal fault.?
With regard to the last minute switch in opponents which even surprised Mayol, Arum said ? I got no idea what happened, what didn?t happen. I wasn?t paying attention to that.? Arum said Mayol wanted a fight and he was merely ?helping out and didn?t know anything about the opponent and all that.?
However, Arum said he stayed behind to see the fight because ?the idea was that he (Mayol) was going to win the fight because then I was going to match him with Edgar Sosa? the WBC light flyweight champion. Arum said that while Hernandez was ?a good prospect he was an inexperienced guy.?
Arum said ?it looked like it was going to be a blowout. It looked like Mayol was going to knock the guy out and then he like ran out of gas or something and Hernandez got on top of him and knocked him out. It looked to me like he (Mayol) could have gotten up but he just stayed down. I couldn?t understand it.?
It was the same observation of Dr. Allan Recto who had been appointed by WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman as one of the ring physians for the fight card.
